Is this HIV and did I get it through making out???
      #237548 - 03/16/08 02:36 PM

I'm hoping someone can help me...because I don't know what the heck is/was wrong with me...and doctor's don't know either. Can I trust the tests or do I need to do more testing like viral load, cd4 count etc, ?

Here's my deal...

About a year ago I had a very low risk...where I made out with a few girls one of which was a stripper in Vegas. I was going to have sex with one of the girls - actually had the condom on and trying to insert but she was too dry so we stopped. 3 weeks later I came down the worst illness of my life. I had high fever like up to 104 for a week and all the other ars like symptoms (especially vomiting, swollen lymph nodes with exudates, sore muscles, fatigue, night sweats, joint pains, weight loss, etc.) all lasting about a week or so. I went to the ER because I could not breathe very well because my tonsils were so swollen and my fever was still high. They told me it had to be some sort of virus because I tested negative for influenza, strep throat, mono, etc. - pretty much all the normal viruses. My doctor there actually asked me if I was gay. I asked why? She just asked again and asked if i was a needle drug user or what my HIV risks were. I told her I wasn't gay (I'm not gay and have never had relations with other men), not a drug user and told her I wasn't recently exposed to HIV because I didn't even think of "french kissing" and rubbing my condom covered sausage on her vagina as a risk. I asked her to test me and she said "well, you're not in a high risk group and we don't test for HIV here you'll have to go to your doctor to do that..." Absolutely pissed me off! About a week later I developed tingling and numbness in my feet and legs up to my knees. A week after that I saw a neurologist who diagnosed me with "post infectious neuropathy" or a mild form of Guillain Barre syndrome. I tested negative via rapid test about 8 times up to 14 weeks after the french kissing incident. I felt fine and was told I was in the clear but now I keep getting sick. It's about a year later now (13 months) and I just had an oraquick rapid test done again and it was negative. The clinician was talking to me the whole time about odds, safe sex, etc...great man...and said lets take a look at your results - well they weren't there yet. He said sometimes they take a little longer. Does this mean they found something that didn't look right and had to make sure it indeed was not HIV? How often are lab errors made where they mix up samples and what not? Finally, am I indeed HIV negative??? I read many sites that many people who display HIV ars symptoms and test negative for other more common illnesses should get tested at 6 months and maybe even 12 months or later. I'm very worried again because I don't know what was wrong with me and this whole time I've been having sex with my girlfriend. I definitely don't want to give her anything. Is it really possible that I got HIV from making out and maybe didn't test pos yet? Or did I just have a random virus or something? I just went to an internalist for a 2nd opinion and he seems to think that I am too young for anything serious to be wrong with me...I'm 26. He says that there are a billion viruses out there and I picked up a very bad one. He also said that if I tested negative for HIV that I don't really need any other tests...what do you all think?

I think you should listen to your doctor instead of second guessing him by asking a bunch of people on an internet board.

A negative test post 3 months is considered conclusive. The only time further testing is needed is when you are at high risk, (unprotected sex all the time) AND your DOCTOR feels it is needed. Evidently, yours doesn't.

BTW. French kissing is not condsidered a risk. The CDC doesn't even bother to list it on their PEP risk guidelines table.

See...that's what I don't get...why would further testing be needed ONLY if it were HIGH risk? I had all the symptoms to the T 3 weeks after making out with the girl which falls right in to the time table...that and no diagnosis was made for me. I'm sure people have gotten infected through other means than high risk exposures and other testing was done for them...I never understand why people say only HIGH risk situations need to be tested further...that doesn't make sense to me. Symptoms are symptoms...shouldn't there be more tests for me???

I see that you glossed over the fact you did not have a risk to begin with which is lucky for you.

Secondly, just about every disease out there has some symptoms. Many of them the symptoms that a person can have during ARS, if they have any symptoms. So you had symptoms. You had something, but you tested negative, so you KNOW it isn't HIV.

Just be really glad you don't have HIV. This little bit below shows just how self-centered you must really be.

Don't want to give her anything? What would you have done if you hadn't tested negative? In some states that's a felony.

Now, do you want to continue a discussion about how you think you have HIV even though you have tested negative?

The really appalling thing is that you really believe that you may have HIV, yet all the while you've been having

I didn't have sex with my girlfriend until after the 3 month negative...and she knew all about it and was ok with having sex with me after that because she felt safe at that time...so for you to say I'm selfish is unfair. She's ok with it...i'm not. I just feel that something is still wrong...maybe it's NOT hiv...i HOPE not. I just don't know if I should let it go or go in for other tests...any suggestions?

It seems as though your difficulties are more psychological than physical. You may want to try speaking to a counselor about your inability to accept that you are HIV negative.

Good luck.

I'm glad that your body is ok, but your mind it's not!!!
I've got tested (ELISA) one month after get high risk situation (oral sex with sperm), but it's negative! I was super glad at teh time, but my body keeps changing and the pain is all of it. So my doubt it's still here, I got to wait more 2 months to be sure about it....
Be cool, man, enjoy life and your girlfriend, and always, take care

Robert, I'm very glad to hear that your test is negative. It's always good to know your status.

One tiny little item.

Giving oral sex is NOT considered a high risk...not even a medium risk. Miniscule is a better term. The CDC places the risk of giving a one time blow job to someone that is infected at 1 in 10,000. Not a big risk. Blood transfusions...now there's a high risk. 9,000 in 10,000 per exposure to a person with HIV.

Relax. If all you did was give a blow job, the chances of your test result changes is...well....miniscule.
