DNA PCR HIV
      #236058 - 01/31/08 02:27 PM

. Can someone please tackle this? Point is, if the DNA PCR test can determine the presence of HIV as soon as the symptoms of ARS are felt, then it may make some sense to counsel people who are going out of their minds waiting 3 months for a test and feeling very severe frightening symptoms to simply take the PCR test and rule out that the symptoms are related to HIV. Next step, of course, should be the Elisa test in 3 months if they had an unsafe experience....but isn't this a logical plan to begin to ease people's worry?

Here's my prior message:
Hi...If you have ARS symptoms two weeks after an unsafe episode and these symptoms are actually a sign of HIV infection, will the PCR test be able to detect the presence of HIV in that short time frame. After all, the symptoms of fighting the infection are already present, so will the test be able to detect the virus at that time?

There is alot of mixed information out there about PCR testing.
Keep in mind I'm no expert, but from what I have read, a PCR can be used to determine if you have been recently infected, before you become reactive on an antibody test. At the same time it is not by any means 100% and you will still have to test by an antibody test after the window period.
Two weeks for a PCR would be consider to short and to wait about 28 days to take the test. Be Well.
