Is a Cold or Flu more simular to ARS?
      #23457 - 10/16/01 10:44 PM

Hi, I know ARS has been said to mimic the flu, or mono. Some people use Cold and Flu interchangably. Recently I had a pretty serious cold with all the classis symptoms. I was extrememly congested, tired, and had a seriuos sore throat. After about a week and a half I developed a peritonsillar abscess that required a medical procedure to remove. Does HIV cause symptoms simular to this. I didnt have a fever as far as I can tell. I have had two risks in my life. I had unprotected vaginal sex both about 2 years ago, and about 2 months ago. Both were one time things, and teenagers. I'm 20 myself. Has anyone on here contracted HIV from a one time encounter, or know anyone who has? Has anyone contracted HIV while using a condom, or know anyone who has? I'm just wondering if HIV can cause my symptoms, and if they resemble the flu, or cold? Thanks...

It is more like the flu. The symptons that you list could be HIV symptons, but that's the bad thing about HIV is that ARS symptons look like a lot of other infections. The congestion part is definitely not a typical ARS sympton. The sore throat and the fatigue *could be*, but you would also be likely to have a fever(100.5 or above) and swollen lymph nodes all over your body. Other symptons include muscle aches, joint aches, and possibly a rash. The abscess that you describe is also not ARS sympton.

As far as one time encounters, the odds are very much in your favor for sure. 1 in 500 is typical for one unprotected sexual encounter. Also, if you read Ryan Kull's excellent answers, he indicates in many answers that one time encounters rarely result in infection. I am happy to report that I know of no one who was this unlucky.

Condoms are the best form of protection. Used correctly(put on correctly, rolled all the way down, and properly withdrawn correctly) and assuming no tears/breaks, they are very close to 100% effective in preventing HIV transmission. Again, I know no one who has contracted HIV that used condoms correctly.

Your symptons do not sound like HIV. It just sounds like you were sick for a while. If you think the women you had sex with were at high risk for HIV, you should consider getting tested. 12 weeks is pretty much conclusive. Again, it does not sound like you have or are experiencing ARS. Try to stop worrying and get to feeling better! :-)

Flu is similar to ARS. Cold is not at all like ARS.
ARS symptoms do not occur after 2 years or even 2 months. They occur usually from 2 to 4 weeks after exposure. Yours is a classic cold. The flu like symptom seen in ARS does not involve conjestion or other cold symptoms. You are fine.

Studies show that people who practice safe sex at all times do not get infected with hiv. And one time encounters are not likely to cause infection. But why gamble with that in future? Use a condom.

Take care and do not stress yourself too much. You are fine young man.
