Mononucleosis (Mono) = Glandular Fever

I've only just found out that this 'mono' of which people speak (in reference to the illness people probably more likely have than ARS most of the time) actually means 'Glandular Fever'. I've only ever known it as 'Glandular Fever' and was just wondering why people use a less obvious term for it? Is it just a US/UK thing?
