One swollen lymph node and no other symptons should not be a cause for concern. When it's HIV, lymph nodes in both your armpits, your neck and groin would be swollen. One node swollen in your case would indicate a localized infection, not a generalized one like HIV.

Hi,

I don't think one swollen lymph node would be cause for concern. It would be more convincing to suspect possible ARS (acute retroviral syndrome, the set of symptoms some people go through during the intial onset of HIV infection) if you had these symptoms: more than one lymph node swollen, body aches, headaches, fevers: "flu-like symptoms". And these would occur roughly between 2-4 (2-6?) weeks after exposure. Even then, those symptoms could be anything. Maybe it might be a cold or flu or something. You have to check with your doctor, and consider getting an HIV test, if you suspect you were exposed.

I always put my disclaimer, I am no doctor, but I am just echoing the information that I glean from the expert postings from this site.

How big will the swelling be and will it be painful?
Thanks.

Ok, I will answer as best I can here. First on the swelling, it really depends! Statistically, 70% experience lymphadenopathy(swelling of the nodes), so it might not even happen. However if you read why lymph nodes swell, I would think that number would be higher. Lymph nodes are a huge part of the body's infection fighting system. Lymph nodes swell with HIV because of an increased production of white blood cells(antibodies) to fight the HIV virus. The lymph system is the body's distribution system. It carries fluid with the cells to fight the virus in addition to also carrying off dead virus that have been killed. The swelling can vary from mild to mumps like swelling which is pretty noticable. Most doctors say swollen lymph nodes are almond to golf ball size when they are swollen and rice to pea size when normal. I believe the swelling is related to how hard your body is fighting the virus. I do NOT know this for a fact, but the swelling is caused by a massive amount of fluid being built up in the glands and this buildup is due to large amounts of cells being produced to fight the virus, so this seems plausible. I'm not a doctor though, nor I am an HIV specialist at that, so I could be way off here.

How painful will they be? Umm, that depends too, but mostly on the swelling. It will hurt some because the swollen nodes are increasing pressure on the tissues that surround them. I don't think that it should excruiating pain, but it will be tender and possibly sore if you push on them. I would also like to add that stress DOES NOT cause lymph nodes to swell. I know that a tons of symptons that we here have can be caused by stress, but this isn't one of them. BUT, you can stress yourself enough to weaken your immune system to let an everyday weak virus, cold, or whatever in and that COULD enlarge them, so swollen lymph nodes could defintely by stress related. You could also make them tender if you keep punching on them a lot. They don't like that!!

If you suspect lymph node swelling, I highly advise you to see a doctor if your lymph nodes swell. Why? Because, it could be anything!! The lymph node reaction is to ALL infections, not just HIV.

Why do I know all of this? I have been freaking out for a while now because I've thought that my lymph nodes have been swelling/swollen for the last month. I went(again) today to my doctor because I was sure that my neck area underneath my ears(it's been bothering me) and my groin glands were swollen. Well, they weren't and I wasn't even pushing in the right place in the groin area. The doc thought I was crazy asking her to check all my major lymph node areas on my body. But, my point is that swelling is best determined by a medical professional. Throughout this whole ordeal, I have asked many, many times about various lymph nodes swelling, and every single time, they were not swollen even though I was convinced they were. I've had two docs look at me now and still nothing. Stress and anxiety can really damage you. I'm only starting to realize how much I've done to myself. I also know how hard it is to shake that feeling that you're screwed and this is the first of the signs of HIV. All I can say is be mindful of the big picture and try not to take every little ache, pain, supposed swelling as a neon sign indicating that you're sick.

Dude, wake up and smell the coffee. He doesn't need to be concerned by one lymph node *possibly* being swollen. He hasn't even said what his exposure/risk was. Try to be a little more informed before making posts like this and scaring someone.
