WEll from the incident i already mentioned I went to the emergency room to get a prescription for PEP. They didn't favor the idea becasue of all the side effects.
Just a question about the prescription. They gave me three:
Indinavir Sulfate: every 8 hours Nevirapine: Every 12 hours Abacavir Sulfate: Twice a day
Wanted to make sure if there are the right ones. Any feed back and sugestions is appreciated. Is the side effects that bad?
thanks

They gave you PEP for a lap dance? There is no risk of transmission in lap dances. How irresponsible of them. Not sure why they are giving you what they are since it's not the recommended stuff for PEP, but maybe they thought the side effects from these would be worse and teach you a lesson.
Indinavir (Crixivan) is the oldest Protease Inhibitors on the market and since you are taking Viramune this protease inhibitor should be boosted with Norvir. Not sure why they are having you take it on the old dosing schedule, except for the fact that in order to take it twice a day you must take Norvir to boost. Which you should be taking anyway with the Viramune. Then it's only twice a day. Crixivan when boosted with Norvir is now used as a salavge therapy for people that are unable to use the newer better medications.
Crixivan's most notable side effect is kidney stones. Make sure you are drinking at least 64 ozs of water a day. This drug can also cause skin issues such as rashes, dry patches, darkening of the skin. It can also lead to jaundice due to it hindering the liver from doing it's job.
Ziagen (Abacavir) can be taken once a day, so again I don't know why they have chosen the dosing schedule they have. It as with Crixivan are not considered to be first line drugs. It is seen more in the combination drug, then prescribed as a single drug with other medications.
This also can be one of the most dangerous drugs out there. Many people suffer hypersensitivity to it. This hypersensitivity usually appears by the 2nd week of treatment. Once a person has been taken off of Ziagen because of hypersensitivity, restarting this drug can lead to death. It also has some other very nasty side effects. Lactic Acidosis, Liver problems. Fever and rash, headaches, stomach upset, feeling tired, sore throat, cough, and shortness of breath can be signs of the hypersensitivy. But of course they can also be side effects from the other drugs. Welcome to the puzzle.
The Nevirapine (Viramune) is set for a different dosing then you are on. It should be started at 1 pill only for 2 weeks then increasing to 2 pills a day after that time frame.
There is a high risk of liver problems within the 1st six weeks of taking Viramune. Skin rashes are a common side effect with it.
Now I did all this for one reason. It educates whom ever reads this. I personally don't believe your posts.
No responsible medical team would start PEP and if they did they would start you on the recommended PEP combination not these very old drugs.
In the past couple of days it seems that we have a few posters with just enough information to make it interesting, but not enough to sound honest.
So for all you worried wells rushing off to get PEP or PCRs because of 'stories' one reads here, STOP, THINK, take a deep breath and go talk to your doctor.

Anon-One do you have any sugestions? I did have vaginal sex for about 20 seconds no condom. Isn't this a reason to take the PEP?
Thank sooo much

agny i understand your worries and anxiety but please read Anon's post very carefully. there are lots of side effects and pep is still not a guarantee.
if it will help you make your decision, please also think that you had a minimal exposure even if the woman was pos. i also read somewhere that the vaginal fluids are not that infectious, but it is the cervico-vaginal fluids, deeper inside the vagina that are the main cause for infection from vaginal sex. if all you had was this 20 sec of stand-up sex, i doubt you are at much risk. on top of all that, it seems you are not even on the correct regimen.

No that wasn't a reason to start PEP. Check out table one in Transmission risk. Unprotected sex (something real, not 20 seconds) is a 5 in TEN THOUSAND chance of transmission when the (real) sex is with a woman KNOWN to be HIV+.
