Tested Negative - Still Unsure
      #227156 - 05/17/07 12:11 PM

My Wife and I just tested negative using the Oral swab method (not the rapid test).

How accurate is this test and is there issues in the specimen collection (not collecting the right stuff or any at all?) Would the lab indicate that they did not have the right sample to perform the test and indicate that there needed to be a re-test?

My wife is having a ton of unexplained health problems and I'm just making sure we can be secure in our results.

I could see that one test may have some issues but both? I would also assume that the lab would have to disclose if there were any issues with the sample - correct?

Please pass on the truth - not just peace of mind.

Thanks,

You and your wife are negative for HIV, assuming that you have had not potential exposures in the last three months (window period) The tests are accurate. You need to seek the real cause of your wife's health problems. don't dwell on HIV...it's not the cause.

If you really think there might be a chance at HIV infection have your health care provider run an HIV panel – specifically a viral load. The viral load will tell you how much HIV is in the blood. The reason I tell you this is just because you test negative for HIV after six to nine weeks; does not mean you didn’t get infected. I was accidently stuck with hypodermic needle at work and tested negative six months later. Three months later I found myself in the hospital with 105 degree temperature that did not break for a week. I lost 30lbs and still tested negative. The physician I saw at the hospital called an Infectious Disease Specialist who did an HIV panel on me. I had a viral load of over 300K and was still testing negative. The reason for this is my body was able to fight and suppress the conversion from negative to positive. In fact it did it so well I did not have a positive test for over a year. So, Best advise to you is see a specialist; not everyone is the same and not all persons will have the same experiences with HIV.
My heart felt prays for you and your wife.

300K ? yet in another post you stipulate that your viral load has been around 50K without medication for the last 3 years. It's between you and your doctor why you haven't been on anything at all. Your viral load alone warranted SERIOUS consideration for going on medication.

It does bring up an interseting point however. It is not uncommon for someone's viral load to peak very high shortly after seroconversion and then drop down to your set point. It sounds like your set point was right around 50K, which ain't too good really.

From what you have said it doesn't sound like the test didn't perform properly. From your description and the fact you ended up in the hospital it sounds like you were in the middle of a HUGHLY bad case of ARS and were just then seroconverting which means a RECENT infection.

Did you perhaps forget a possible exposure closer to the time you tested postive?

or

Are you just having a bit of fun scaring the WW?
