HIV in dry blood
      #21907 - 09/05/01 02:48 AM

Does anyone have an idea how long HIV can live outside of the body in blood? Is it 5 min? Is it one hr?

It depends on the quantity.

There is no specifics on the time frames, but based on what I have read, it does not survive very long (seconds) on the outside.

Take care,

Typically not very long. But no one can tell you exactly because NATURE does not work that way.
You could have a huge viral load in the blood that has dried and a virus that is very strong and it could
last longer than a little blood with a little virus that is weak. Universal precautions need to be kept
regardless if it's a puddle or dried for days.

Typically (avg.) once the blood is dried, the virus is dead. But in certain tests scientists have been able
to find live HIV virus in dried blood that is 2 days old. Please understand that these tests used
concentrations of the virus that were 10x the normal amount...get my drift...

To get HIV form dried blood you'd have to have a cut and literally rub the cut back and forth grinding
in the dry blood...if you were even crazy enough to do this, the odds of there being any viable virus are
very slim.

Hope that helps

Dear Dr. Feinberg,

I bought a Victorinox utility knife on a cutlery. This was on display. The vendor told me she often cuts herself when displaying the knives. I am not sure if she cut herself with the one I bought, but it is likely (if she is positive and if I cut, even after cleaning the blade with alcohol) for me to get HIV in this "strange" way?. How much time will it take for the virus to be unactive or something like that, should I use my knife? should I disinfect it? Thank you very much.

If you wipe your new knife with a dilute solution of household bleach, 1 part bleach to 9 parts water, it will kill any HIV present. BY THE TIME THE BLOOD DRIES, THE HIV WOULD BE DEAD ANYWAY, but you can use the vleach for extra "insurance". I don't think you have anuthing to worry about
