Can HIV antibodies cross react in a herpes test
      #215286 - 11/22/06 06:44 PM

Hi folks,
I am wondering if HIV antibodies can be mistakenly be picked up by HSV-2 IgG ELISA. This may cause false positive for HSV-2. ELISA (even for HSV-2) being a more sensitive test as compared to specific has been always known to throw in false positives. Does anyone know if HSV-2 test can mistakenly locate HIV antibodies. I hope my question is making sense. This is something new that has started bothering me.

Thanks

You find some rather odd things to be bothered about. I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that your concern is that you have tested postive for Herpes, but you are scared that what the test picked up was actually antibodies to HIV and that you are not infected with Herpes, but with HIV.

Go with the Herpes. They don't cross react. You may get a false postive on your herpes test, but it wouldn't be because of HIV.

Now go find something normal to be bothered about.

Anonymous,

Your guess work hit bull's eye. Why i was thinking on those lines was coz many times we get false positive for HIV as the HIV ELISA is extremely sensitive which leads to it picking up non-HIV antibodies as well. That's why western blot is considered to be a confirmatory test(it being specific)..

In the same way even herpes is tested using IgG ELISA which is supposed to be very sensitive.

Well, thanks for replying to a fuck head. My logic and reasoning have taken a major ass beating after going through the saymptoms day in and day out for last 6 months. The main reason being I faced every possible ARS symptoms starting from 2 weeks and at the correct time as well. The whole physical ordeal i went through and still going just does not feel like herpes but who knows....

Thanks bro....

You might have something besides Herpes. Have you talked to your doctor about it.

Since you are quick to point out how your symptoms showed up in the correct time frame, you should be just as quick to acknowledge that the symptoms self-resolve in about a week and continuing symptoms are not a sign of HIV.

If you are still dealing with symptoms at 6 months then it's not very likely to be HIV. If people living with HIV got sick and stayed sick, then there wouldn't be a third of the HIV positive population walking around without any knowledge that they have HIV.

You don't mention that you have tested for HIV. Anyone that is sexually active should get tested once a year as part of their routine health care. Beats trying to turn a Herpes test into a statement on your HIV status.

I tested on HIV ELISA at 3 months and that was negative. But, for more than last 2 months I have white spots in throat (deep inside behind uvula) and I am able to scrape a part of them off and it seems like cottage cheese. I feel like a an ever existing lump in a throat which causes difficulty in swallowing. At times my neck felt swollen and feels as if something is stuck in throat. My tongue is white and dry and my lips burn.

Before this started, I had a bad case of diarrhea for 2 days an before that I had faced major peripheral neuropathy(burning in hands and feet) constantly for 6 months after exposure.

I understand that symptoms for HIV do not continue for 6 months but what is worrying me is that this might be opportunistic infections what i am having now with respect to sure throat for over 2 months now.

So you say you have tested negative at 3 months, which means you are not infected with HIV, yet you are concerned about various opportunistic infections that constitute the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome which is the syndrome that occurs after years and years of HIV slowly decimating the immune system.

Do you hear yourself?

Since you state you had MAJOR PN, which glory be, it self-resolved...that's got to be a first....I'm betting your doctor didn't dx it, since it requires a great deal of medical interventio, loads of pain medication so you can walk and changing HIV medications. That also means that you probably haven't seen the doctor for your cheesy throat or lumps.

Got health issues, see your doctor to determine the true cause. Can't accept the fact you don't have HIV. See a counselor.

Actually, the problem is due to massive amount of information - some correct some not so correct, I feel further confused. My exposure was not in the US. It was with a SW from eastern Europe. I have heard that ELISA tests may take longer to detect(like more than 3 months) antibodies if infection is from a non-B subtype. Other than that, yes, I have to go to doctor for my throat. All this is just too much to handle.

Oh lord, I see can see where this is going. Finding all sorts of strange, odd, out-dated and bizarre reasons to dis-believe your test results. Not commenting on the whole PN thing, which means you decided this diagnosis for yourself. The situation involves a sex worker.

Good luck with the guilt and anxiety that this drudged up for you. Hopefully one day you can deal with those two issues and then you will find that the whole HIV thing stops tormenting you as it does today. But in the meantime. There really isn't anything anyone here can say to you that will make a difference.

I had the same symptoms you have, still with a sore throat, and a lump in my throat, also had white stuff in back of my throat but went away in two days, well it is been 4 months and I tested negative, I will test again at the 6 month mark. I suggest to do the same for peace in mind. good luck.
