Dear all, I am 30 years old and suffer from OCD. Contamination fears and everything. Here is what happened last saturday. I was at a laundromat washing my clothes. I went to the bathroom and washed my hands. I used a lot of soap because of my obsession and finished it. The soap was liquid and was in a plastic container. I noticed some stains on the container and I started obsessing there could be blood. I thoroughly checked the stains: two of them were large and yellowish in color. They looked as if they were glue residues. However there was a smaller one about 1-2 mm by 4-6mm that was yellow-orange with some small red-brown spots. I accidentally touched it, so I looked even closer to make sure it wasn't blood. But I wasn't sure, in a way it looked like it could be blood, although well maybe it wasn't... but I couldn't tell for sure.
I looked so closely that I got afraid I touched it with my nose. I panicked and decided to rinse my hands and nose (as there was no soap) with fresh water. I did I put my hands under the water and rinsed my nose. As I did this, I through some water inside my eye.
now I am afraid that if that stain was blood, then I may have become infected with HIV, because I touched the stain and then the water that went into my eye.
Also I had some cuts in my hands resulting from repeated washing with an antibacterial soap.
Yesterday I washed myself a lot and showered with the antibacterial soap as I had run out of shower soap.
Today, I woke up to find I my body was all a bit erythematous. This could be due to the soap and water, my shower (which was cold) lasted very long and I put a lot of soap on my skin without the water running over me and rinsed it only later.
The "rash" is not itchy on my trunk (front and back), neck and face, but it is itchy on my legs, hips, and scrotum. This could be because the itchy parts are those that I washed the most.
However, I am scared because I heard that the ARS rash does not itch and appears mainly on the trunk. The rash I have on the trunk does not itch.
I tested my temperature with an electronic thermometer in my armpit. When it rang (after a minute), it said 96.8. However I left it on for a few more minutes and it reached 98.6 before it automatically turned off.
Also I feel very sleepy tonight, more than usual...
Do you think I risked HIV infection? Should I get tested? Or is mine a no-risk situation?
Thanks

also the stain was on the bottom part of exterior of the container and possibly touched the sink while the container was not in my hand. There was no soap on the stain, nor did I put any soap on it.

I know you might find it difficult to accept...but honestly and truly, NO risk at all. None whatsoever.

thanks all you really relieved my anxiety. I was pretty much convinced there was no risk, then I noticed the reddish color on my chest and panicked... hopefully it is just due to the soap. Let me ask you something. If I was certain that stain was blood, would it still be a no-risk situation?
thanks

Please deal with your OCD or at least accepted that HIV isn't transmitted in any way from an incident such as you described.
In the over 25 years HIV has been around how it is transmitted is documented. It can be transmitted by unprotected sex. Giving oral or by a needle that has been stuck in your vein, either by you such as during IV drug use or from an accidental jab.
Those are the transmission vectors. HIV is a fragile virus that is not viable outside it's environment.

HIV dies within minutes of being in the atmosphere and not in the right temperature and conditions of the human body as the others have already told you, so even if it was a bloodstain on that cannister it wouldn't have had any active virus in it. HIV is very hard to get, it cannot fly through the air or travel on water droplets, it has to be person to person physical contact or a syringe sticking into you that some else has previously had in them. And I agree with other advice to you, your mental state is not well. You need to see a psychologist or psychiatrist quick smart and get some medication sorted out. You are spending lots of energy and mental effort needlessly. Just think how nice it would be to just not have to worry and to be able to mentally relax. I take Prozac for my OCD (which is only mild I admit) and it was only after it was gone that I realised how much energy it had actually taken out of me. Do yourself a favour and see a professional for it.
