Hi, I'm not sure who to ask this question to, but I have been sitting at home crying about my situation for the past day. Therefore, I feel like I should ask somebody. Last Thursday night, I went to a concert. My friend and I ran into a guy at a bar, who seemed pretty sweet. At one point he wiped something on the bartender, and when she asked what it was he said it was blood. She started laughing and went on with her job. Later on I ordered a soda. When the bartender was done pouring it, he handed the drink over to me. Now, I don't know if his finger went into the drink or if his hand came into contact with anything, but I'm completely freaking out thinking he could have gotten blood into my drink somehow. I shook his hand later on that night and there was nothing on it, but I still don't know. Should I go in to get an HIV test for this? I know that I should probably wait six months because the results will not be accurate, but I want to know. I keep going over the night over and over again, making myself sick. It probably sounds silly, but I would really appreciate an answer.

Hi my friend:
Dont worry too much about this. As I have read:
1) HIV in the blood could live only a short time 2) Its hard to tell if that guy is HIV positive but even if he was his blood could not have enough of the virus to be contagious 3) If you touch the blood with your hand your skin is a verty good protector 4) If the blood gets to your drink (even if HIV survives to your drink and I dont believe that) your gastric juices have killed any HIV.
This is a very but very hard possibility of getting HIV, but wait here for some more advice. Here are very well informd people at this forum
God bless you

Dont listen to the last post. The Virus could only live for a couple minutes outside of a cell. If it was mixed in with your drink it would not have survived and even if you had gotten blood in your mouth, the chance of being infected is very very unlikely. There has never been a reported case of someone getting HIV in your circumstance and its nearly impossible. An HIV is definitly not recommended for you(ask any doctor or HIV specialist) but if you suffer from OCD and a test will bring you peace of mind, take one at three months.

If HIV was that easy to catch we would all be screwed. Think about all the football, and basketball players who come in contact with each others blood while playing sports. Surely we would here of more athletes and regular people getting infected through casual contact. I am not sure why you stressing this no stress situation. As long as you are not an IV drug user, and you don't have unprotected anal, oral and vaginal sex you will not get infected. Just forget about the incidence!

I join the others in thinking that you have nothing to worry about. Even if there were blood in the drink, I highly doubt the virus would survive and besides, ingestion through the mouth isn't a good transmission method for the virus. The virus has to get into your bloodstream somehow, so if you think about it the best way is in an IV drug user's needle situation, where it gets SHOT directly into the bloodstream, or in the case of a guy who has unprotected anal sex and semen shot inside him, after the sex act has disrupted the anal lining and giving a clear access way.
So be not afraid, if it will put you at ease, get an HIV test though I highly doubt you need it. Good luck friend.

I'd like to thank everyone for their responses, but I have one more question. Later on in the evening when we were saying goodbye, I shook both of his hands. Now, I can't remember if I had any cuts on my hands, though I know I certainly wasn't gushing blood or anything. However, what qualifies as an open wound? Am i being ridiculous about this? I know you can't acquire HIV through casual contact such as a handshake, but the guy had cut himself earlier in the evening. Someone please respond. Thanks again.
