A question for the HIV informed
      #21041 - 08/19/01 01:19 PM

Hello all. I have been reading this board for months and never posted until now.
I first want to compliment you all on the information, compassion and support you give everyone here. You are, without a doubt, a special group of people.
Anyway, I have been consumed with worry for 5 months. I had a situation in which I was very drunk and had sex with a guy. The condom broke but I'm not sure if he came yet. We decided to end it at that point.
2 weeks later, I met a wonderful guy and we are dating. I didn't tell him about that incident but I did have some tests done. I had a dna pcr at 6 weeks and 2 antibody tests. One at 12 weeks and another @ 17 weeks. All negative. But I'm still worried about this 6 month time frame.
My boyfriend and I had HIV and STD tests done together (my 17 week test) Negative. We had sex after those tests came back negative with a condom but he did enter me for less than a minute without one.
I guess my worry is what if the 17 week test didn't pick it up and I gave it to him. I had tonsillitis and a cough about a month after the druken incident. I still haven't had my 6 month test yet. Should I be worried or follow the advice of the GMHC and put it behind me?
Thanks for letting me get this off of my chest. I really hope that I'm being a worry wart here because I feel that this guy could be the one. I would freak if I gave him anything since he was the one who brought up being tested together before having sex.
Can I put this behind me or is there a real chance that I could be infected?
My prayers, respect and love to you all.

Deb

The 6 week PCR DNA is conclusive. When coupled with the 17 week Elisa test it tells you positively, absolutely, conslusively, without a doubt, once and for all, with no questions whatsoever, that you are HIV negative.

Clear enough?

Deb, let me start off by saying that you tested negative at 17 weeks! .1 percent of people take six months to seroconvert and this is because of poor immune systems due to other serious diseases they may have(and im not talking about Tonsillitis) As for tonsillitis, I have been told by my doctor and have read from many credible sources that tonsillitis has nothing to do with ARS. Tonsillitis is a bacterial infection, HIV is viral. The throat infections they talk about in ARS are minor ones, not strep or Tonsillitis. The CDC only only still uses six months for those rare exceptions that are in the .1 percentage. There has also been word they are going to stop recommending testing at 6 months, although being as conservative as they are, this is unlikely. If i was in your shoes i would be thrilled. I am getting my six week test back tommorow and if it comes back negative i will be thrilled but I will also test again at three months. I wouldent worry about it because I dont see HIV in your future.

JO1,
Can you please share what credible sources you've read that say ARS sore throat is minor? Not that I don't believe you, but it seems like there are all kinds of reasons for someone to have a minor sore throat. I am experiencing a slight sore throat along with other symptoms. Could you please clarify what you've heard?

Well when I say minor, I mean any type of soar throat that is not as serious as Trep and Tonsillits. Your absolutly right, anything can cause soar throats, including stress which makes you more susceptible to throat infections. My doctor told me this and I also read it in some ARS study that I cant seem to find right now. What other symptoms are you expierencing?

Your negative..........A 12 week test is pretty conclusive by most authorities.......be safe in the future......but put this behind you!

My symptoms are a minor sore throat with a fair amount of post nasal drip (the kind you need to snort to swallow). This by itself wouldn't freak me out, but I also have a small hard lump (node) in my groin. This combined with other symptoms I may be imagining plus the vague symptoms others have described freaks me out.
