Possibly the stupidest question asked here ...
      #210322 - 10/05/06 12:19 AM

But I have to ask it ...

Can HIV be spread using deoderant(sp?) bottles? I was at a club and I paid a guy hanging around in the toilets to get a spray from some unknown dedrants across my armpits - it smelled like normal deoderant but I did not recognise the label

Okay, so basically, even if this guy thought up some scheme where he could put the HIV virus in deoderants bottles, and have it survive for a long time in there amongst all the other sweet-smelling chemicals - there is no way it can enter my body through my then sweating hairy armpits? Right?

Awaits angy replies about how stupid I am being ... sorry - I just have to ask.

you win! it is the stupidest question!

One has to ask, if you knew it was stupid then why did you ask?

You can get coodies this way but not HIV/AIDS.

Sorry. I just wanted to confirm it was impossible.

Sometimes it helps to have someone else reaffirm what you really know deep down....I've been there...scared and just wanting reassurance (okay not over deoderant...but still)
There are no stupid questions....I truly believe that. what, hopefully, this person will walk away from this with is a better knowledge of real transmission routes and perhaps be able to pass that word to others that are less informed. amazingly many people don't know the real routes of transmission and so if someone takes the time to learn then I have to applaud them.

mr. original poster...don't be afraid to ask questions...that is how we all learn. but, take this lesson, learn more and spread the word...maybe someday we can put an end to the stigma of HIV/AIDs!

Thanks for you nice reply - so basically, just so i know, even if the HIV virus was in the deoderant bottle it couldn't survive for long with all the other chemicals, right? And even if it did survive it could not infect me through my underarms - not even through the sweat pores? Actually, HIV can only live in a bodliy fluid, so even if it was injected into the bottle beforehand, it would most likely linger at the bottom and die ammongst all the compressed gas.

Right?

Sorry.

sigh ... can I please get an answer to my questions. I have searched the net and I have not found anything, so getting an answer would be nice ...

Can HIV survive in liquid gas? Like, can it float?

I thought it was necessary to end the stigma of HIV and make sure people know what is and isn't a risk, It's annoying when I'm trying to ask a genuine question, and I just get scarcastic replies.

No, HIV would not survive mixed with the chemicals and if you had a bottle of straight HIV solution, spraying it on intact skin (that without a obvious, open bleeding wound, would not cause infection. The modes of transmission are unprotected sex, intravenous drug use, medical exposures for those in health field (being stuck with hollow bore needle). That's it...deoderant, food, toilet seats...ALL SAFE from HIV...other stuff, can't help ya....but HIV...if you don't do drugs and you don't ahve unprotected sex you are safe.

Okay - that's all I wanted to know. Thank you.

(I did actually have a legitimate risk of HIV 4 or 5 months ago, but tested negative at 12 weeks - I guess I'm still a little jumpy when it comes to HIV and need to tone it down a bit - but I guess it's good to have the fear still in you a little (just to act as a warning for not keeping safe).

Anyway, thanks.

I don't think fear is good, but awareness...and yes, I do think the past experience just has you a little jumpy. All is good. Just be safe.
