WINDOW PERIOD ACCORDING TO NY HEALTH 1 MONTH
      #209229 - 09/29/06 10:00 PM

http://www.health.state.ny.us/diseases/aids/facts/questions/testing.htm

CHECK THIS OUT , IT SAYS MOST WILL BE TESTED POSITIVE WITHIN 1 MONTH OR SOONER. IS THAT FOR REAL OR A TYPO !!!!!

How soon after exposure can HIV infection be detected?
With the HIV antibody tests used in New York State, virtually all people who are infected will test positive within one month of being infected. Most people will test positive even sooner.

The period between the time of infection and the time that a HIV antibody test can detect the infection is called the window period. During the window period, an infected person does have HIV and can pass HIV to other people, even if his or her HIV antibody test is negative.

So, if you HIV antibody test is negative, you can be sure that you do not have HIV only if you have not engaged in any HIV risk behaviors (such as having unprotected sex or sharing needles) during the past three months.

Keep in mind NY also extends their window period an extra month to 3 just to be safe, when it is proven the outer limit for a positive ELISA is ~44 days.

You need to trap the 10% is why the extension (3mo) exists..

Some of you need to tak a class in statistics so you understand probability better. An additional class in biology would also be good so you could understand probability as it applies to biological processes. Think of HIV testing results shown graphically with weeks post exposure on the horizontle and the number of people testing positive at that point on the verticle axis. The curve will start out near zero very early on in testing when antibodies will not be present in anyone (say 1 day after exposure), then the curve will rise to a point where most people will test positive probably in the 4 week range (if acually exposed), then will fall as fewer people test positive late as time passes (those who take longer to seroconvert). There will always be outliers both those on the fast side (who test positive very fast) and on the slow side (those who take a long time to test positive if exposed). The reason a standardized testing window period is often set at a pont where only a small percentage would test positive out to that point is that this is a very serious illness and you don't want 3% let alone 1% to be missed when they thought their test was conclusive.
