Does anyone know when hairy leukoplakia appears if someone gets infected ? - The back of my tongue is white and, after having seen a doctor, he told me that it was not a fungal infection. Thank you for the answer, I am very scary.

Dear Anonymous:
Hairy Leukoplakia may never occur with HIV infection. This typically is not a designated symptom with HIV infection. Oral Thrush would be the oral disorder typically seen in HIV positive individuals. Physicians classify this as a negative sign in a persons onset to AIDS. Thrush would occur in a patient with a CD4 count lower than 200 which medically is one method of diagnosing from HIV to AIDS. However, oral thrush is not guaranteed if the CD4 drops below 200, but it is possible. Oral thrush also may occur with higher levels of stress and anxiety. Without knowing your risk behaviors, and whether you should be terrified I would say the ball is in your favor. If you have hairy leukoplakia the doctor would have easily been able to diagnose you. Do you still have your tonsils? Do you smoke? There are many causes to the white appearance in your mouth. Don't simply jump the gun and aim for the worst. It could be anything from film caused by smoking to bacteria consistent with tonsilitis. I would try gargling with mouthwash for a couple days and lightly brushing the tongue, if the appearance doesn't fade consider seeing a different physician. Good Luck

I am indeed a smoker and that could be related to a dental surge I had 3 months ago. I will definitely go and see the dentist. Thanks to all of you.
