If someone has never received a blood transfusion, completely abstains from sexual contact and does not inject drugs, is this a 100% guarantee that he will never become HIV? Or can other behaviors lead to infection

Dear Anonymous:

There would be some scenarios that may make this person HIV+

One--being born to an infected mother
Two--coming in contact with infected fluids which enter an open wound or mucuous membrane.

If someone abstains from ALL sexual activity, is not an injecting drug user, is not born to an infected mother, and has never been in contact with infected fluids to the areas listed above the person can be 100% confident he/she is not infected with HIV. Good Luck

Infected fluids coming into contact with mucous membrane or open cut? Therefore, the following scenario could lead to infection? person A has a certain amount of vaginal fluid on their hands, person A shakes hands with person B. Person B then casually scratches their lip or rubs their eye as any other person does through out the day. I know this sounds far-fetched, but could it realistically lead to infection???

I read these posts and I do my best not to lose patience because I have been worried well before. I have seen somethings that are just borderline nuerotic if not out there. I just read a post on the Safe Sex forum where the guy who stated that he knows that there are no cases of tranmission from recieving oral sex, but still asked if there has been any transmission from recieving oral sex. I mean HELLO!?!?
T answer your question unless you want to live in a bubble for the rest of your life (The Bubble Boy) you are never gonna be 100% safe from HIV. Every time we wake up in the morning and go to work or wherever you may go we are always at low low risk. So, if you would like to walk around in a human sized comdom thats all you, but other wise just deal with the fact that you are at so much of a low risk that unless you do something really risky youll be straight (no pun intended)!

Dear Anonymous:

The scenario you describe would NOT lead to infection for either person A or person B. HIV localized in the environment dies very quickly. Please note that a large quantity of virus must be able to advance in an open wound before infection occurs. Small concentration of virus typically will not lead to a person becoming infected, but varies with immune system strength, etc. Rather than get in detail about the what-ifs of HIV lets simply state unless you have unprotected anal and/or vaginal sex numerous times with an infected person with semen, vaginal fluids, or blood present; have a blood transfusion from an infected person (virtually impossible); were born to an infected mother (still not 100% certainty the virus will be passed to the infant); have an accidental needle stick from an infected person (considered extreme low risk); or, share needles for injection drug use with an infected person you will NOT become infected with HIV. This virus is NOT airborne, and conditions must be absolutely ideal for infection to occur. Simply touching something will not translate into 100% certainty you are HIV infected. I recommend you continue doing research in the realm of medical advances and HIV transmission, and as always learning prevention techniques are great if you are sexually active. Good luck
