RNA PCR test
      #20738 - 08/13/01 01:23 PM

Can anybody tell me if a RNA PCR qualitative test is reliable ? - I got a negative EIS test at 7 week but my doctor told me that antibodies take time to show up, depending on many factors and that the RNA test is the only reliable one to check for HIV.

RNA PCR checks the amount of the virus in the blood. DNA PCR checks for the actually DNA of the virus. You would want to look for the presence of the actual virus not the amount.

Either is FINE! new

Actually, if you do some research, you'll find that either test is fine within the first 4 - 8 weeks. It's
possible (BUT VERY UNLIKELY) that after a person seroconverts and anti-bodies are formed to
help fight the virus that the RNA test could be undetectable without meds...the DNA test would still be
positive...but that scenario IS RARE, VERY VERY VERY RARE and in fact the new RNA tests are
down to 50 copies. Therefore if you got a not detected on an RNA I would be very very relieved...and
you'd be in the >99% bracket that you're not infected.
