statistics?
      #201208 - 07/24/06 11:48 PM

does anyone know where i can find statistics on hiv? like as far as what my odds are for being positive? just anyone's personal opinion...umm if i tested negative in july of last year, and i've only had one unprotected encounter (anal & vaginal) and it only lasted maybe a half an hour. what are the odds of getting hiv the first time? does the amount of time matter, does the fact that there was no sperm involved matter? i guess i'm just confused on what the odds are of contracting the virus on a first time basis. please help. i'm very worried on waiting to get my test. it won't be 12 weeks until august 12th. thank you.

everyone is different, some will get it from a one time exposure, some wont get it after numerous exposures, some have numerous exposures and then finally, have one that infects them. so i'd have to say your odds are 50/50, each time you get exposed.

Dr. Bob has cited statistics from the CDC in his forum, the "Ask the Experts" forum about HIV prevention. I think you can search that forum and find his source. But frankly, I don't find statistics all that useful. The bottom line is, if you put yourself at risk, you should get a test, and there's really no way to get around waiting through the window period...sorry.

Anon,
Follow this link and go to the chart on the bottom left of page 7. There you will find odds of infection associated with different acts. I hope it helps!

Good luck on your test!

It's not a good idea to assess your likely of contracting HIV based on statistics. Probabilities of the liklihood of contracting HIV by performing various sex acts do exist but playing by the numbers is dangerous.

A lot of factors come into play when trying to figure out what one's liklihood is or was of contracting HIV.

It only takes one sexual encounter to be exposed to HIV, though, it's true that just because you have sex with someone who is infected that does not guarantee you will be infected. However, it is definitely possible to contract HIV from an infected person the first time you have unprotected sex with them (be it a man or a woman). Additionally, the more times you have unprotected sex with that person (assuming he is HIV positive), and unprotected sex in general, the more likely you hare to contract HIV.

The length of the duration of the sex act is irrelevant also. If there was "no sperm involved" (I am assuming you're a woman), then it's much less likely that HIV would be transmitted but it is believed that HIV can also exist in "pre-cum."
