average

The information that "the average time to test accurately for hiv antibodies is 25 days" is grossly outdated. So, let us not go into lengthy definition about the meaning of average. Most doctors, lab technicians and experts say that by 4 weeks, most people will test positive if infected. That is not the average time, but the time for most to test accurately. Dr Stephen Goldstone, an authority on HIV infection says blatantly that by 4 weeks 95% of infected people will test positive. Its time to accept the facts. Please test at 3 months, infact we should. But at least we can breathe a little easy for awhile. It is true that 99% of infected people will seroconvert by 3 months. But the hidden truth is, of that number, almost 95% will seroconvert within 1 month. The 2nd month is for the other 4% to catch up. The 3rd month is just a padding. Right, Oops???

Even if I were inclined to dispute your statements, I could find no current research or statistics to support my position. I personally believe, and I back this up from the practical experience of people who handle ugly bugs all day, that MOST people test positive early on. I also believe that some won't, so - as you so properly phrase it - everyone should PLEASE test at 3 months as well. I think 8 weeks is pretty definitive, and I *think* Dr. Holodniy on The Body says he's never seen anyone test positive after 3 months (I don't have time to go look it up right now.)

I wouldn't say the 3rd month is for padding - I'd say it's for the remaining 1 or 2 people out of the population who have funky immune systems, as is the 6 month final window.

Does MOST = 95%? I can't answer that, and none of the labbies I spoke to put a numerical value to it; Ryan Kull, also on The Body, give Goldstone high marks for credibility. I would personally encourage EVERYONE to test EARLY, at least once, and to start breathing much easier if they're negative at that point. I would also EXPECT EVERYONE to test at 3 months for the sake of the population at large. What I DO NOT expect is for those of us who are worried to be kept in a cage of anxiety and panic for an interminable period of time, when early testing can remove much of that burden.

Damn, I oughta be in politics, no?

I HAD AN UNSAFE EXPOSURE AND TOOK AN ANTIBODY TEST AT FOUR WEEKS AND TWO DAYS. IT CAME BACK NEGATIVE. I AM SO SURE I HAVE IT BECAUSE I HAD THE COLD THING PLUS SORES IN MY MOUTH. I AM AWAITING MY TEST RESULTS FROM A PCR DNA TEST .ARE YOU SURE ABOUT ANTIBODIES SHOWING UP ON MY TEST???

A cold is not indicative of ARS or HIV infection. Sores in the mouth can be caused from a ton of things that are not related to HIV, and in fact the true oral symptoms of HIV infection don't typically show up until years later.

A 4 week negative result, while not conclusive, is a DAMN good start. The PCR DNA tests are claimed to be 99.997% accurate by Roche, who manufactures them. Don't know how long you have to go for the results, but I think you can be comfortable with the PCR DNA results. And then I think you should take an antibody test at 3 months anyway, just as I will, because I can't find a credible medical source IN THE USA who says we don't need to follow up at 3 months.

I HAVE JOINT PAIN BUT ITS NOT SEVERE AND I AM NOT SURE WHAT IS DO TO STRESS AND WHAT IS DUE TO SYMPTOMS. CAN YOU HELP WITH ADVICE I REALLY APPRECIATE IT. I ALSO CHECKED INTO GODSTONE'S THOERY AND I READ IT IS 90% ACCURACY IN ONE MONTH. WHAT DO YOU THINK?

I think Goldstone is more qualified than anyone else posting to this board, unless perhaps some of The Body's folks sneak in every once in awhile.... ;-)

90% is a damn good start - I'd test as soon as practical, with the clear realization that 90% is NOT NOT NOT conclusive. PCR's are reportedly accurate in 28 days from a given exposure - they're also expensive, and they provide a good testing option.

Dr Goldstone said that 95% will test accurately by 1 month, not 90%.

My understanding is that ARS does not come and go.
Night sweats can be caused by stress, heart problems, the flu, and perhaps the phase of the moon in correlation with what your neighbor had for breakfast last week.

In other words, night sweats by themselves don't mean a whole lot except that your body's busy doing something.
