I was reading in the forums at aidsmeds on living with it and they had a topic related to dental needs and how the dentist was the first person that thought that they had HIV. I have oral thrush and have had it on and off for 2 months. I have also tested negative at the 20 week mark using a oral oraquick test. A few weeks back I read on this site that those are not that accurate and are prone to test giver error. Ever since then I have been worried even more, was that poster full of shit or is this true?

The Oraquick test is very accurate. The only fault it has is that it tends to be more sensitive than the blood test, so it's more likely to give a false positive than a false negative. Testing negative at 20 weeks proves that you are conclusively HIV negative. Testing at 13 weeks would have been enough to prove this.

If you really have oral thrush, and it has been medically diagnosed, you should talk about it with your doctor. Thrush can indicate deeper medical problems, and not just HIV. It also occurs for other reasons, such as antibiotic and steroid inhaler use.
The Orasure oral test and the Oraquick rapid test can both be less sensitive than a blood draw in very early stages of infection. But by 20 weeks -- indeed, by 13 weeks -- they should be reliable.
Still, if you're concerned about the accuracy of the oral test, don't be afraid to seek a test with a blood draw.
