As far as std's go in general. You can test for any of them I would say anywhere from a few days and on. In general you can test for any of the following pretty quick: Ghonorrhea, chlamydia, herpes, syphillis, etc. Most people wait for some symptom however. That is one of the reasons i'm so confused with the hiv thing. Why can we test for other std's fast to get it out of our mind, but we are told for hiv to wait 1 month, 3 months, 6 months. All this waiting.

Most STD's show symptoms within a month or so after infection. However, not all STD's have symptoms associated with them. This is why it's important to have a doctor perform the necessary tests. Chlamydia and gonorrhea can be diagnosed easily with a culture, whereas syphilis and Hepatitis C must be detected via a blood test.

Keep in mind that in the case of something like HPV (the virus that causes genital warts), the warts may not appear for years after infection although you still carry the virus. Occasionally warts are microscopic, so you may not even see them. An easy home test for warts: soak a cotton ball in white table vinegar and rub it over your genitals. Any warts you have will turn white. Of course, if you do have warts, it's best to see a doctor for treatment.

If you are concerned about any diseases, have your doctor test you. As an example, Hepatitis C often does not show any symptoms until severe liver damage has been done, so it's best to get screened early on. In all cases, early detection is key so that proper treatment can be given. Good luck :)

I've recently been through this one. Copper's right, although I would add HSV1 and HSV2 to the list of STDs that can linger for years without symptoms.

Two weeks should catch all of the bacterial diseases, I think. You can test for HSV, but I think a lesion culture is the preferred method. Warts are pretty easily removed, and may or may not recur (the virus doesn't go away, though, just as Herpes doesn't go away.)

Your doctor can test you, Quest can test you without a dr's referral, and your local health clinic can test you as well. Regarding the vinegar test for warts: false positives are possible there, so don't freak it you see some white spots - just go see a doctor.
