Is it a bad sign?
      #194935 - 06/07/06 02:31 PM

Is it a bad sign if a person takes longer than 3 months to develop antibodies to HIV? Does this mean that their disease will progress faster because their bodies were slower to create an antibody defence?

Nope. It does not take longer to develope antibodies than 3 months. The only exceptions are chronic ID users, some on chemo, and SEVERLY commpromised immune systems. If you dont fall into this catigory then a 3 month test will be 99.999999% conclusive for ya!

What about a chronic cocaine user? Could this weaken the immune system?

In fact cocaine may delay antibodies development, but maybe to six months. I don't think it could take longer. That's a recommendation from a doctor, by the way...

It CAN but that certainly does not mean it WOULD. It MIGHT delay it, but they would have to be a chronic drug user for a LOOONNNGGG TIME.

What is your exposure?? Have u tested yet??

Unless someone's recreational drug use has severely impacted their overall health, such as causing them to lose weight, lose sleep, become malnourished, etc., it probably wouldn't affect their ability to produce antibodies in a timely way.

Even getting affected in several ways (weight loss, lack of sleeping, and stuff, like my case) by cocaine use, after doing a lot of research, I don't think it is possible to take longer than six months... Right now I have some symptoms but now I think maybe they are related to other things. Anyway, back to your post, I would take a test at six months. I got tested even at a year, but believe me, I took tons and tons of coke, and the recommendation from the doctor was six months, not twelve, I took it just for confirmation, and I'm not a doctor!!! So I keep thinking six months it's OK for those with drugs problems like myself.

In reffernce to Geralds post. 6 months might be okay for you to feel fine, but it only takes 3 to get a conclusive result. With todays latest tests most antibody test will turn positive by 3 weeks, and ALMOST ALL by 6 weeks. The remainder 6/7 weeks is to catch those RARE late seroconverters like yourself.

Ah! And I had negative results, on Oraquiks at 3,6 and 12 months. So I was not a late seroconverter.
