Temperature Question
      #19110 - 07/10/01 09:18 PM

Asking probably a stupid question - but how do you know if you have a temperature? The day after a risky exposure, I bought one of those digital thermometers and was checking my temp about 30 times a day. Never went above 98.8 degrees. But, I remember being flush in the face and feeling hot - could this just be OCD. My doc asked if I had a fever and said 'no'. However, he said that a lot of those digital thermometer are not too reliable. This, of course, did nothing to alay my fears. Sorry if this is a stupid question - but figured I would ask.

I think to qualify as a fever it has to be close to 100 or so, even though 98.6 is the normal human body temperature. I've been watching mine closely over the last month, it fluctuates anywhere from 97.1 to 98.8 or so - and I think that's normal. I have also learned that if I concentrate real hard on what I'm afraid of, I can make myself pop a sweat and *feel* like I'm running a raging temperature.... but when I take it, it's only around 98.6. So I'd say the readings you're quoting fall within the normal, "I'm really stressed out" range.

Most MD's agree that anything UNDER 100 is within the normal range...why <100 and not 98.6?
Because people can have different temps (just like your Bp) during different parts of the day and
because of different metabolic rates within their body, which DOES fluctuate temp within a degree or
two. Certain foods, certain allergies and digestive processes raise temp...STRESS can also make your
temp rise.
