Does anyone know the difference between a HIV DNA PCR test versus a viral load test that's performed on someone already confirmed positive, obviously one is about detecting the virus and the other how much but are the methods used essentially the same for both tests?

The PCR by DNA is looking for the virus itself and the PCR RNA is looking for the viral load count as you stated. The reason they use the RNA on pos folks is to keep track of the viral laod that is the amount of the virus in the system. They like to keep the viral laod as low as possible in pos people. You can be newly infected and have no viral load, most of the time if just infected you would have a very high viral load and then it goes down as the body fights the infection. I just wanted to put that in there, there's a gal on this site and I'm not going to mention names that tested pos for HIV and had a RNA and the DNA and both were neagative to this day she still has an undetectable viral laod with no meds. She did test pos on the Eliza and the Western Blot test I think at 3 months.
