question guys. Is Chronic Thrush a sign of early H
      #191003 - 05/12/06 10:31 AM

Hi Guys

I have chronic oral thrush as well as thrush down below. Had it for 5 weeks. Doctor says i must have got it from the girl i have been seeing for the last ten months. Took 6 months of seeing her (unprotected sex) for this to happen though and she doesn't seem to have any problems but i don't know her history. She is not speaking to me now as she is insulted as i asked her that very question. I have had blood tests which showed me to be in very good health, no abnormalities, but not an HIV check. Doctors say that they would have picked up an irregularity if I had been infected even though they would not know if it was HIV.
I don't know whats true, but can you guys let me know if chronic thrush is possible at early stage HIV with no other symptoms except possiblt a runny nose sometimes. Do the doctors really know?
Thanks guys, like to know your thoughts
Mr. Thrush

Thrush can be an early indicator of HIV infection. But thrush can come from other things too. And I'm not sure what you mean by thrush "down below," since thrush is by nature an oral infection. Women can have genital yeast infections, but I don't know of any counterpart in men (urethritis, maybe) and in any case, that's not called thrush.

If you have medically diagnosed thrush and you've been having unprotected sex with someone whose history you don't know, it would be wise to have an HIV test. Routine blood tests like CBCs will not reveal HIV infection.

It's a good thing that your doc did not detect any amnormalities with your blood test. That's def a good sign. If there were abnormalities seen, then more test would have been needed to see what exactly the problem was. But since there were none....

Hi Ther Steve R.

By down below I mean a penis yeast infection. Doctors think I picked up a thoat thrush infection at the same time through oral sex probably because my girlfriend at the time was on the pill or something like that. They say that as I checked out completely healthy otherwise, ie liver heart, kidneys, lungs etc, white and red cells at the right level that I am okay. The only thing they commented on was that my sugar levels were slightly up, but only slightly. Thats all really, if that means anything different.
Thanks for your replies , it means a lot, pretty lonely worrying about this

its not a sign of "early" hiv infection, it takes awhile for thrush associated with hiv infection to develop. Hiv is a slow progressing disease, its will take a number of years to break your immune system down enough to allow a chronic fungal infection, such as hiv related thrush to oocurr. When it DOES get to that point, thrush is usually chronic even when treated with the medications, until your immune system is built back up to ward it off itself*

keep in mind, thrush can be caused by many other things such as taking antibiotics, etc.... know your status-take the hiv test*

Yo thrush boy,

I dont think your going to clear your worry without an HIV test do you?? I was surprised your docs did not recomend a HIV test since you say you have been having unprotected sex with a women whom you do not know the status of?? What do you think?

You mentioned your sugar levels. Diabetics are also prone to thrush. If you have diabetes, that may be an explanation for your infections.

If you're concerned about HIV you should take a test. You have had unprotected sex, which places you at risk.

Your right eriCO, i even phoned an HIV support organisation who said that it wasn't worth having the test confirming my doctors comments but it has made no difference to how I feel about it, it is still on my mind. I will have to go to London where you get same day results. Not sure how i will get back if it is bad news though or even what to do about it. Cheers and thanks for your comment

Thanks AIDS2HIV your comments are comforting. But it sounds like i have to bite the bullet and get tested. 'Know your Status' says it all i think. No matter what the docs tell you the only sure way is to be tested. As I mentioned to EricCO I will have to go to London to get the same day test. Thanks a lot, any other thoughts you may have are more than welcome

Thanks SteveR, I don't have diabetes though, just slightly raised suger levels. You are right, I am going to have a test no matter what advice i get in the UK. Very much appreciate your input

UK Thrush,

Don't worry so much. Go get tested and them come back and tell us.. The "future" is not the place for you to be right now if EVER...

Love

This is not true. My doctor pinpointed a rough estimated time of HIV infection for me end of 2001, early 2002. By August 2002 I had the early stages of thrush that got out of hand and by end of 2002 by when we figured it out, I was diagnosed with AIDS given I had the thrush as an opportunitstic infection (which was pharangeal and esophageal) as well as an initial CD4 of 70 (yes 70). Thats within a year of infection, and had it been 1985, I mighta lasted until early 2003 and thats it.

Anyways, to the original poster. Thrush is not something you necessarily catch from anyone. Healthy people are constantly harboring various yeasts and bacteria that a normal immune system keeps at bay. Thrush in the mouth(called Candidiasis) is common in young or old people, as well as immunocompromised individuals that dont have the Tcells that normally take care of this common yeast (Candida albicans). Immunocompromised people include HIV+, cancer patients in chemotherapy, etc. Its not normal, and I would get an HIV test. Your CBC might not reveal that you immune system is damaged from HIV until you have a differential blood count. The fact that the CBC is "normal" as the doctor says is a good sign, but you still could have low CD4 that are masked by high amounts of other T and B lymphocytes, makeing the overall number seem normal (your White Blood Cell (WBC) count), but in reality your CD4 could be very low. Typically thrush will develop around a CD4 count of 200. And one last word of advice. Regardless of what has caused you to get it, I would make sure to take care of it ASAP. It can be quite a nuisance that can be difficult to get rid of, even with medications like mycelex and diflucan. Did the doctor put you on either of these?

Hi Todd

Thanks for your reply. Sorry to hear about your news, hope you are doing okay now?

The doctor originally gave me a daktarin gel containing micanozole for three days that actually seemed to work quite suddenly but three days did not seem to be enough and it came back with a vengeance. I have also had and diflucan tablets and amphoteric lozenges which helped but did not cure. The first thing i said to the doctor when i went was concern about hiv but he was more concerned about cancer or diabetes. My blood tests though only showed slightly raised suger levels otherwise very good with cholestrol at 4.6 so he was not concerned and advised not getting an HIV test. I must admit that I thought if your CD4 count fell to below 200 you would likely to be getting more symptoms of HIV, but now am beginning to wonder if anybody really knows until they ARE TESTED. Personally though I don't think thrush is a good sign when there does not seem to be anything wrong according to a normal blood test, because something must be causing it.

If you have any other advice i would be pleased to hear it, either about HIV or getting rid of thrush? I have to go to London to get my test though, apparantly results are available within 4 hours, in my city where i live the process takes forever and privacy is always a concern.
Thanks again
