GETTING INJECTED WITH A CONTAMINATED NEEDLE . HELP
      #190976 - 05/12/06 01:00 AM

I went to donate blood on may 9. They had only 2 nurses and a receptionist at the front desk. Since there were 2 people before that were donating already, and only 2 nurses, the receptionist took my temperature, blood pressure and pulse and also hemoglobin hematocrit test. That hemoglobin hematocrit test is getting a neddle prick on your finger so they can get a drop of blood to test for hemoglobin hematocrit. You have to pass these tests do be able to donate. I have been really really reallly worried that she pricked my finger with a contaminated needle. I wasnt paying attention to see if she used a new needle, because i didnt know i was gonna get pricked. She put gloves on and then pricked me with the needle. It took a second she got the drop of blood she wanted and then put a bandage on my finger. Since she isnt a nurse and I am worried that she might of used a contaminated needle or a needle that was used on someone else before me. Can someone please help me out with my FEAR of a contaminated needle being used on me. After that the regular nurse put the needle in my vein when I went to a different room so I can begin to donate blood. I AM VERY WORRIED!! PLEASE HELP.

Normally when they are doing some sort of finger prick it is a single use pop out needle. They can not be reused. I know when my husband had to do one of those for his at home HIV test and the first prick did not produce enough blood he had to try to break it open and not even that worked. He ended up having to usse something else to cut his finger to make him bleed. They are usually the single prick sticks and you are fine.

The receptionist put gloves on, which shows that she knows something about universal practices and infection control, so I'm sure she would not misuse a lancet or use it twice. She's obviously had some training.

Our national health guidelines have long said you cannot get HIV from donating blood, period. People who work with blood are very careful about such things.

aside from that...in todays world, NO one, nor no corperation will put themselves at liability for a lawsuit. People sue today when they "think" they have case, only to be defeated, i surely dont see anyone inviting one as brazenly as you describe*
