White Blood Cell Count
      #190656 - 05/10/06 01:48 PM

OK, I'm totally freaked out. I went to my doctor to get my blood work results and he told me that all the tests were normal except that my white blood cell count was slightly elevated.

I've tested for HIV several times over the past 2 months, including having an HIV DNA PCR test at 8 weeks, and the last Elisa test I had done was at just over 11 weeks. All were negative. I've also been tested for Syphilis, Hep B and Hep C and all were negative.

It's been almost 13 weeks since my suspected exposure, it was high risk, because I'm almost certain the condom broke during receptive anal intercourse.

I am so freaked out and I don't know what I'll do if I have this disease. I think I'll just want to die. I should never have done what I did, I was incredibly stupid. Being gay friggin' sucks.

actually when it comes to HIV/AIDS you should worry if U have a LOW WHITE BLOOD CELL COUNT not a HIGH WBC count.

Yes, but that's usually in the early or later of HIV infection, but an elevated WBC can also mean that the body is fighting an active infection.

but if that infection was anything serious, it would be detected on the tests...hell, a infected hair folic can make your white cells go up....ANY bit of infection, your body produces white blood cells to fight it*

You would think, but there are always cases of people seroconverting a little late. I had a DNA PCR done at 8 weeks, that showed neg. I can't help but be anxious. There are a few stories of people seroconverting up to 6 months or longer.

there isnt ALWAYS cases of it, in fact theres very few so much so, they been able to pinpoint causes for late seroconversion.....also you said " I cant help but be anxious" go talk to a professional counselor about your anxiety issue

it just kills me how people log on here so concerned about thier health, but yet they wont address mental health issues.
Instead they come here and wave thier mystery disease flags...

hey AIDS2HIV

Try to chill....theres a lot of anxious people on looking for answers. Sunkysts looking at other possibilities too.

But Sunkyst AIDS2HIV is right....you need to start considering if your symptons are non std related. The symptoms you described to me, in private message...without a doubt you have somekind of infection butsince youve done so much trying to dismiss HIV surely its time to start thinking about other possibilities. I meanim only at the 6/7 week test, but i already feel my first result neg likely will stay that way...and my exposure was megahigh (shagging my round south east asia unprotected plain stupid and never again).

Just chill, and think about other possibilities for your illness.

Hey Sunkyst,

An elevated white count doesn't mean anything significant. It just means you're fighing an infection. It could be anything. And viral infections often make white counts go DOWN, not UP.

The 11-week ELISA, combined with your PCR, almost certainly rules you negative. You can get a later antibody to be sure, but I would be STUNNED to see it change.

Your last paragraph reveals your considerable anxiety, and I think these are the issues you really need to work on. Even if you were positive, "wanting to die" would be an unfortunate way to handle it. And why do you say you were stupid? If your partner was wearing a condom, you were doing the right thing -- you can't be blamed because it may have broken.

Concerns about HIV are not a matter of being gay -- straight people are at risk for this illness too. EVERYONE has to be careful.

Steve

Sun,

I will echo what Steve said.. HIV has a habit of kicking WBC's down not up...What did you doc tell you before you left the office? Where are you diging up this anxiety? I would say you have more chance being straight than positive right now...

Signed Gay Guy,

Hi Eric,
I have been reading your posts for a while and I am always amazed by your positive and upbeat attitude.

My doc said that in all likelihood it isn't HIV. He said it could be many things but didn't commit himself. He suggested I do the blood count again so I went ahead and did that. I asked him if stress could be a factor in the elevated WBC, he said No. However I did read that acute emotional anxiety (like I've been having) can indeed elevate WBC count.

You know Eric, there's another thing that scares me. A few weeks ago (around 8 weeks after exposure), I had gone to a Primacare facility to help me with my anxiety. He ran a blood test on me that showed my WBC at the lower end of the normal range. Why would my WBC go from the lower end to the higher end in about 4 weeks?

Plus I had many ARS symtoms over the course of a month, 3 night sweats (not profuse), muscle weakness (for about a month), slightly swollen lymph nodes, slight numbness in my fingers. All of these symtoms pretty much went away but now I've got a burning sensation in my legs (especially at night).

However, I've tested so many times already for HIV, the last time being at just over 11 weeks and nothing has been picked up yet (thank God!).

I went to a doctor that also specializes in HIV. He drew blood on Tuesday for a viral load test, so I should get the result of this by Thursday of next week. I pray to God that this shows nothing also.

I just don't know how I'd cope with being poz. It would devastate me, I don't think I'd cope as well as you have. Already my anxiety is affecting my job and I don't know what I'll do.

Sorry for going on so much, but I can't help but be totally freaked out. I hope this all turns out OK but I'm sceptical that it will be OK. I will let you know how things go.

Take care,
Sunkyst

Sun, I would just leave the diagnosis to the docs and quit self-diagnosing.. It doesnt work and you wind up where you are right now. Have you ever thought about thinking your -ve??? Lets stay on the right side of the page. Let Thursday come when it comes for the vl test (boy your doing it all!).... One more thing. If you are experiencing this kind of anxiety, have your doc Px you an anti-anxiety meds.. There is nothing wrong with taking these and they will stop you from "Roominating" about hiv and your health. They will help you in your work, your sleep etc. I am sure your doc would have no problems Pxing something for you right now if you called him. I would say your anxiety is causing most if not ALL of these symptoms.. I suppose you going out and getting safely laid tonight is out of the question to get your mind off of this CRAP!!

Take care of yourself!!!!

usually in acute hiv WBC counts drop. because the body is overwealmed with the virus.. specially the Lympocytes. and in later stage hiv usually WBC is lower then normal.

higher WBC can mean alot of things including infection & stress/anexity can and will increase your WBC count.

dont sweatt it
