What are my chances?

I had an exposure with someone I know has AIDS (4:00PM). It was Oral, and I was giving. There was no precum that I was aware of, although I occasionally get blood spotting when I brush my teeth in the morning (7:30AM). This was 45 days ago. I dont recall any Seroconversion symptoms other than a mild tonsilitis infection and lymphnode pain. I was seriously anxious about the exposure for days, always touching and squeezing my groin lymph area, and probing my tonsils etc. I thought this could be the cause. Currently all I have is an annoying pain in the groin area (between my thighs actually). Does anyone have a resonable expectation (statistically speaking) of my liklihood of HIV infection. I will test at 3 months - but who knows what my chances are????

I would say your chances are VERY low. However, you state he had AIDS (I don't know if you meant to say he is HIV+ instead of he has AIDS--medically there is a difference); thus, he probably has a higher viral load which means he is more infectious. Yet, having AIDS means he has an OI (opportunistic infection) or his CD4 is below 200, and does not necessarily mean his Viral Load is high...So if he has Aids do not assume that you would automatically be infected due to his disease's progression to the last stage. Aside from the medical jargon, I would say your risk is extremely low. Very few cases have ever been reported for oral sex HIV transmission. However, there is a risk especially if he has a very high viral load (due to the virus being present in any pre-seminal fluids at a higher concentration). Yet, again saliva tends to kill the virus so if you did not have any open wounds in the mouth, or brush your teeth before or after the incident (most experts indicate 1 hour before and after) you should be nearly 99.9% certain you did not contract the disease. Don't stress out...
To ease your worries I had unprotected anal sex as the receptive partner with someone who later tested HIV positive twice, and unprotected insertive sex 10-15 times and I am 100% HIV- I would say you should be certain that you are not infected. Hang in there, and do not stress about the incident.
P.S. read the post in Fatigue and Anemia titled Re: Help. The expert states that even in high risk sexual situations it is presumed that infection only occurs in 1-4% of persons...(and the sex you had is not classified as high risk---thus, your chances are even lower than that!) You are fine, don't worry yourself sick!

Thank You for the positive reinforcement! I will check out the information you mentioned...And I will get tested in a month to get a clean bill of health. The stats were extremely helpful in placing this error in judgement in perspective! As a note; the information as to his AIDS status was second hand info. He may have been HIV+. As for me, I was spitting out my saliva after the incident (which was sticky and stringy) and quickly rinsed my mouth out with mouthwash about 10 minutes after the incident. How I found out about his status so quickly is another story entirely. Thanks Again Friend.

I just read the first post from Anonymous in response to this topic. I would like to say that a post like this, directed to someone whose fear may be completely and totally all-consuming (regardless of the validity of the concerns behind the fear), is very nice: sensitive, non-judgemental, and it contains information helpful in assessing the risk incurred.
I know - no one has asked for my opinion on this subject, and I've already been called everything from irresponsible to an ignorant jerk in my brief time here, but the fact remains that this is the type of post that the "probably worried well" like myself find helpful.
Disclaimer: This should not be taken as criticism of any specific person or post. It's intended as a compliment to the poster, nothing more and nothing less.

Thank you "Oops" for the compliment. I want to help make everyone aware of this disease so we can help those who are already infected. Also to help make everyone who may be sexually active aware that the risk does exist and it is important to protect yourself and others not only from HIV but from all STD's. Yet, it is no one's right to criticize someone if he/she engages in sexual activity that they later fear may have transmitted this disease, but to provide support and understanding. It is now important for everyone to become knowledgable on this topic and work to support those already infected. I am very educated on this topic and know it is helpful to persons fearing infection to have positive, helpful responses to their fears as I try to provide in my responses. Living with an HIV partner who I love dearly has ultimately led me to become active in the fight of HIV/AIDS and to become educated on all its aspects. You too can become an asset to this disease and its community by becoming educated! God bless, and again I thank you...
