What exactly is NAT testing? I have heard that blood banks use this technology to test the blood supply to make sure it is safe. I have recieved a 13 week negative so I'm good to donate but still a little gun-shy. I guess I am just wondering how sensitive NAT testing is. If I didnt have, for whatever reason, detectable antibodies by now (and I know that far and away I should) would the NAT definately pick it up? Thanks.

I believe it looks for the virus itself

Thats a really intresting question because if people donate during their "window period" only the non FDA approved test would pick it up and it is much too new and exspensive to be being done on a large scale. However, you NEVER hear of HIV from blood transfusion anymore, so they must be doing some accurate test on a large, cost effective scale. I wonder what they are using?
