Another "Kissing" Question
      #18788 - 06/28/01 11:09 AM

Here goes.... A week ago I received several lap dances in a strip club. The dancer and I engaged in some brief open mouth contact, not deep or prolonged, but some tongue-to-tongue contact. I would not worry about it, but three days later I developed a fever blister on my lip. If I contracted herpes from that encounter, what would be the possibility that I might have gotten HIV, as well?
I am married and feeling guilty, yes. But I also want to protect my wife if there is any risk to her health as a result of this. However, the risk to my marriage by telling seems greater to me than the risk of HIV. Please offer advice. Should I seek testing? Or just forget about it?

If all you did was kiss, and she didn't tear a hole in your lip and then bleed into it, don't worry about catching anything serious from her. The fever blister - herpes - is a distinct possibility. However, if it's any comfort to you:
Experts think that up to 70% of the population has Herpes I, and that most catch it in their early childhood. It can lay dormant forever, you can get a cold sore once, twice, or - like me - several times a year.

I wouldn't run to tell you wife you may have caught a cold sore from a stripper. I'd go see my family doctor, tell him you have a cold sore, and ask for something like Acyclovir. I find that taking both the oral form while using the cream helps tremendously.

Beyond that, if the cold sore(s) become recurrent, which may not happen anyway, you will eventually be able to tell what precipitates them: for me it's sunburned lips, sickness, or prolonged lack of sleep. When that's going on, I use the cream prophylactically (sp), and it helps a lot.

Do NOT start worrying about HIV - if you're like me, your guilty conscience alone will kill you. You did NOT get HIV from the experience described.

Have a nice day.
