Does anyone recommend the DNA PCR test i.e. the test that looks for HIV directly rather than HIV antibodies. Does anyone have any experience of this test and if so did it put your mind at ease. I did read that there's a high degree of false positives with this test.

Did you ever figure out what was causing your symptoms or are you still having them? I'm having symptoms too, about a month after exposure, I started getting muscle soreness, got three night sweats (not real bad ones), have swollen lymph nodes.

hi
regards from india
DNA PCR test is not a serology assay because it does not detect antibodies to the HIV virus, however measures the proviral DNA.
Yes, what you read is true, DNA-PCR has high rate of false positives. For intial screeing an HIV antibody test is recommended.

A DNA/PCR test is the best test you can have. Don't listen to the hype about it. It can detect the HIV virus's DNA in as little as two weeks. The false poz rate everyone quotes is nonsense. Yes it has a higher rate but that is still insignificant. If you had a pcr/dna test after 28 days and it is neg then you do not have hiv infection reguardless of your syptoms which sound to me like stress. DJ

Just out of curiousity, i thought going to see Dr. Steve was gonna be your last ditch attempt?? Why Mayo? I've had a family member with a terminal illness who went there, and their experiences were that the Mayo clinic is overwhelming conservative in its treatment and diagnosis protocols -- not willing to try much or search for much. Just thought I'd throw that in, although I hope you find your answers.

I'm in Canada (Alberta), too, though I'm from Minnesota. Perhaps the infectious disease docs are good. My family member saw the Cancer people and they were not very helpful -- basically, since couldn't fix it with the recommended surgery, they pretty much packed him home and gave up on him. Eventually he ended up at a special Cancer Treatment center in Illinois which WAS a more holistic type of treatment, and very open to trying & trying again.
I dunno, but it just sounds like your problems are not ones that the conventional medical field is very willing to explore -- have you thought of broadening out and looking at more alternative methods of treatment? That runs the risk, I guess, of never getting an exact "diagnosis." But perhaps they could, with diet and other remedies, at least improve your quality of life. Good luck....
