STD? cold sores, herpes???

i've seen how cold sores are active in hiv poz individuals. but i thought cold sores were common in people with a herpes strain? and the cold sores would be were you came into contact with the herpes virus. ie you won't get herpes on your lip if you have genital herpes would ya? please shed some light on this question. i do not have hiv, nor herpes just curious.
