SEROLOGY tests in US
      #181006 - 03/19/06 09:12 PM

I have questions about the serology tests performed in govt sponsored testing centers.

1. Is the process same in all states ?
2. What is the normal process. 1 elisa & 1 WB ? My nurse didnt give me any damn information.
3. How much time does it usaully takes to complete all the tests.
4. How much time a WB block test takes ?
5. If the results take more than a week to come back, does it mean my elisa was positive ?

thanks for all your inputs ...

I don't know the answers to all of your questions, but I can tell you about my experience at a local health department in Mississippi recently:
I got the blood drawn on a Friday, and the woman who drew the blood said 3-4 business days. SO - I went ahead and went back the following Tuesday (not ready), Wednesday (not ready), and finally Friday my result was ready. I was nervous b/c it took more than the 3-4 business days, but it was negative. I also posted a worry about this and the great people on this board told me that you can't judge a result by the tiime it takes. Hope this helps with that part of your question.

Here's how it works where I come from-

The local health dept does two types of standard tests
1. The Rapid (Not crazy about) just my opinon
2. You can request that you get this one, it is the one that has been around the longest. Sounds like if your waiting, this is the one that was done on you. This test I feel is the best to use, they have been having a few problems w/ the rapid coming back w/ false pos. Not very often but it happens.
No, if your test takes a week to get back that's because it just takes that long, don't mean nothing else. The WB as I understand it, will only be done if your Eliza is pos. Don't get yourself all stressed out, I know it's hard just try to stay calm and KEEP BUSY. I hope I have helped.

1. Is the process same in all states ? If you go to the local health department yes, all government run agencies have to use the same processes for testing. Normally if it is for HIV they take blood, that blood is screened for HIV & other STD's, on the chance that it is positive during the Elisa test they back that up with a western blot test which will confirm the first or not.
2. What is the normal process? 1 Elisa & 1 WB ? My nurse didnt give me any damn information. They always perform an Elisa tests first, this is the best test used for detection of HIV because it is not so sensitive that it gives false readings often, but it dose pick up all subtypes and strains that are common here. If that comes back showing positive then it is backed up with a highly sensitive western blot to confirm or deny the validity of the first test.
3. How much time does it usaully takes to complete all the tests? Even with having to run the tests a second time it should be back in 7 to 10 days, there is one factor though that people forget about. This time of year there are usually a lot of tests being run at the same labs for people with flue, strep, and many other seasonal things the doctors run through the labs during the cold & flu season.
4. How much time a WB block test takes ? Like I said in the last, it always depends on how busy the labs are, most labs even at there busiest will not have any lab tests take longer than 14 days unless the sample was lost, then you will be called back to have your blood re drawn.
5. If the results take more than a week to come back, does it mean my elisa was positive ? No it dose not, it could mean that it was a bad week at the lab and some of the less life threatening tests were shuffled to the rear of the testing chain.
