Don't know what to think...

I've read numerous articles on the risks of being infected with HIV and other serious diseases like hepatitis from nail salons. While there has never been a confirmed case of transmission this way and it's thought of as being an extremely low - almost negligible - risk, I'm starting to wonder if my last visit in December could have infected me. I can't really remember if I had any open cuts on my fingers or received any from unsterilized instruments (files, nail drill, emery board).
About 2 weeks after my last visit, my throat suddenly became swollen, tight and sore, I had a fever, clicking in the ears and swollen glands behind the ears and under the jaw(painless). It took a while, but my throat eventually got better and there is still clicking in my right ear and the gland behind said ear is still swollen with no pain. I tested around 5.5 weeks (not for this particular reason) and was negative.
All of a sudden, my parotid glands (in the cheeks, along the jawline) have become tender, though I can't feel any bumps or swelling. I've read that swollen or painful parotid glands are indicative of HIV infection, and that's what has me worried. I'm going to be tested again in April at the three-month mark. In the meantime, I'm going to see an ear-nose-and-throat specialist and see what he/she has to say.
I consider myself well-informed and know that HIV can't live long outside the body in open air and is sensitive to chemicals (ie: acetone, nail polish, cuticle oil, etc.). On the other hand I really don't think that my symptoms are caused by stress, as I got them before this entered my mind as a possibility. I understand that there are others on this board who have had much riskier encounters and are at greater risk than me, but please be understanding. I am aware of how outlandish it seems, but I can't seem to put it out of my mind. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

You seriously think you got HIV from a nail appt?
Damn, how uniformed can you get?
You don't get HIV in the way you described. What you do get is an award for living in this day and age and NOT KNOWING HOW HIV IS TRANSMITTED.
Pretty stupid.

Did you check for Strep? Ear infection? Wax build up?
You can't get HIV from a nail salon. I don't see how that is your "exposure" to HIV.
Hope you feel better soon.

To Anonymous: I wouldn't even have considered it a possibility if I hadn't seen numerous articles with physicians saying there is a risk. If you'd like I can post the links to some of them. I have of course taken into account the media blowing things out of proportion.

To IzPoz: I already had strep a month before this occurred and was just getting over a bout with bronchitis. I was checked and there was no sign of infection or wax buildup in my ears. Antibiotics were prescribed for the swollen glands, but there has been little to no improvement. It's the tenderness of the parotid glands that is making me nervous, as this is said to be indicative of HIV infection. My exposure could have come from unsterilized equipment, as it was a busy day and I was one of several served in rapid-fire succession. While transmission in this fashion has never been documented (and that encourages me somewhat) there are numerous articles stating that it's possible. Thanks for your concern.

Sorry, I was accidentally Anonymous for a couple of posts. I know symptoms aren't the thing to go by but here is the story so far to give you a better idea:
December 24, 2005: Very suddenly developed a feeling of fullness in the ears (clicking when swallowing) and soreness & tightness in the throat with occasional pain in the jaw area. Glands under jaw were also slightly swollen from time to time. Occasionally took Tylenol & used throat lozenges as advised by physician. Symptoms varied in severity and eventually decreased over the course of a month (throughout January).
February 2006: Noticed glands behind ears were swollen, but not painful, with the right being more swollen than the left. Right ear was still clicking occasionally from December. Physician also noticed skin redness & irritation (again, more on the right than the left). Was prescribed & applied antibiotic ointment for 2 days. Returned to physician after 2 days – redness & irritation was gone, but glands were still swollen. Was sent for x-rays and prescribed oral antibiotics for 10 days. X-rays showed no abnormalities.
Mid-March 2006: Left gland is no longer swollen, but right one remains and there is still occasional clicking in the right ear, but no pain. Tender parotid glands with little to no swelling.

No, you cannot get HIV from the route you describe and consequently HIV testing is unwarrented.
Goodluck
