what is considered weight loss?
      #179190 - 03/10/06 11:40 AM

Hello,

I was just wondering what you consider weight loss because although I weigh roughly the same (about 186 lbs) I am definitely thinning out. I can tell in the clothes I wear and people keep telling me that I lost weight. I had a possible exposure with a tranny sex worker a few years ago.

Howdy from the LoneStar State!

It has been said that if the weight loss is greater than 10% of your normal weight in a given period of time, it is considered ABNORMAL, IF the loss is INVOLUNTARY; meaning that it is unexplained.. (i.e. if you are not eating or sleeping properly, or going through ANXIETY/STRESS you might loose weight and that wouldn't be considered unexplained). However, if you are trying to diagnose yourself based on that, please stop.. ONLY healthcare professionals can diagnose based on their knowledge and the results of different medical procedures; as I gave you a couple of examples, and there are many things that could cause loss of weight. Good Luck

P.S. If you don't have any health issues, have a family-sized double-cheese burger today!

That's the thing, I haven't lost weight but thinned down ALOT. I'm basically the same weight but thinner. And the weight loss is completely unplanned. I tested about 6 months ago and was negative but I now have my doubts.

Well, then it's not weight loss. Also, if the exposure was 'a few years ago' why don't you get tested and move on? I think is the best thing to do. Go and have the hamburger.. it's on me!

If the expose was years ago, then your test was conclusive. You don't have HIV. It also sounds like you aren't losing weight if you weigh roughly the same. If you have concerns about your preceived weight lose then see your doctor, but drop the though this is caused by HIV because clearly you are not infected.

True! I overlooked where he says that he already tested negative. Seems like he needs more sleep and less internet. :) Good luck!

hi

regards from india

I dont think so. If you had an exposure few years ago, then test now rather than speculating...it will help!

Goodluck

Unexplained Weight Loss: could be a sign of a serious underlying problem. Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) and a new onset of diabetes can cause weight loss. These can be diagnosed with blood tests. Many types of cancers also lead to weight loss in the late stages. The dropping pounds could just be related to high stress, with associated changes in diet. But you owe it to your self to make sure its not anything more serious.

Get tested if you feel you placed yourself at risk.
