accuracy of different kinds of tests
      #178974 - 03/08/06 08:12 PM

Is one type of HIV test any more accurate than the other? I had a rapid test done (not the oral one, the one that uses a blood sample, sorry I don't know the name) at 7 weeks and plan to have the same test done at 13 weeks. I just read a post by someone who said that the ELISA test was positive and rapid was negative. I thought they were all equally acurate, but am I wrong? Are the rapid tests less accurate????

rapid test are very accurate after 13 weeks, the thread you were reading, doesnt say she is positive, the western blot was indeterminate so it could of been another virus giving a faint line she is testing again, and waiting for the results, if it bothers you than take the elisa test for your 13 week test. love and peace

all prelimary "positives" are checked against a western blot, regardless of the initial testing.

thanks for the reply... just wanted to clear that up, and after rereading the other post I understand the discrepancy of the tests. the rapid test at 13 weeks will be enough to ease my mind.

peace and love

hi

regards from india

Rapid tests are more than accurate. Studies have demonstrated that the sensitivity and the specificity of rapid HIV tests is as good as EIAs, Ergo rapid tests are more often used for screening.

Your 7 week test indicates that the virus is absent, however another test at 12 weeks warrented for a definitive result.

Goodluck
