Get The Facts

WHAT IT IS:
Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

HOW IT IS SPREAD:
HIV is transmitted through contact with the blood, semen, vaginal secretions or breast milk of an HIV infected person.

INCUBATION PERIOD:
Antibodies can typically be detected in the blood 3-6 weeks after infection. The time from infection to an AIDS diagnosis usually takes 10-12 years in adults.

SYMPTOMS:
HIV infection most often has no symptoms. Flu-like symptoms often occur four to twelve weeks after infection when seroconversion generally takes place.

Men: The symptoms are variable, but include swollen glands in the neck and armpits, fatigue, fever, thrush, night sweats and weight loss.
Women: Women also experience swollen glands of the neck and armpits, fatigue, fever, night sweats, weight loss and gynecologic disorders, including yeast infections and PID.
AIDS DIAGNOSIS:
An AIDS diagnosis is confirmed once an HIV positive patient's CD4 or T cell count drops below 200 or (s)he is diagnosed with one of the AIDS defining opportunistic infections.

TESTING:
A blood test shows whether HIV antibodies are carried in the blood. Certain conditions can cause a false positive or negative result. Therefore, tests should be confirmed with a second test. With an incubation period generally lasting 3-6 weeks, a test done too soon after an individual has engaged in high risk behavior will produce a negative result even if infected. There are two types of testing, anonymous and confidential. With anonymous testing, patients are assigned results within an identifying number. In confidential testing, the results are kept in a medical file.

TREATMENT:
There is no cure for HIV/AIDS. However several drugs such as AZT work to slow the progression of HIV infection. People who are HIV positive often help strengthen their immune systems by following a proper diet, exercise, and sleep regimen, managing stress and abstaining from substance use. Some people living with HIV practice Eastern therapies such as meditation, acupuncture, and herbs used to control the virus.

HIV Risk Comparisons

Here are some common sex behaviors grouped according to relative risk

VERY LOW RISK — No reported cases due to these behaviors:

fantasy — cyber — or phone-sex

using clean sex toys

masturbation — mutual masturbation

touching — massage

thats good.....but that doesnt mean EVERYONE is, afterall isnt that why you posted that, for everyone to see?

the point Im making is you have no other knowedge of hiv/aids than whats on the internet, and I'm merely pointing out you cant go by whats on the internet, entirely. I understand you want to help, but please be sure to show the whole picture of hiv/aids, and not just what YOU want everyone to see. Thats the same thing that happens with internet sites.....they only post information they want the public to see......When/If you ever do get infected, you will look at,and know, the whole picture, because it will get thrown in your face, because your life will then depend on it

bullshit, i dont know where you come up with this fact of yours but while lots of people will seroconvert in that time period some dont, maybe you wont, do you want to take that chance? people wantting to believe that 3-6 week is okay to test and than forget about it show up from time to time, we have them come into the clinic i show them the papers that come with the test itself than they say well why is that on the internet because anyone can post anything they want on the internet, yes even i, but i would rather err on the side of being safe, i feel sorry for your future bed partners. love and peace

see, you dont even know what you are talking about.....thats the test sensitivity capabilities.......meaning its capable of detecting in that time period, LOL

Testing relies solely upon how the individual human body reacts to hiv, as to when it will develop antibodies....because if the body doesnt produce em, those tests cant pick em up, I applaud you for your galiant effort though....

get off the internet and go learn in the real world*

I think you two clowns need to look on this website for the answer here is a hint Bruce Mirken & Niel Constantine

while the CDC and assholes like you were telling people the window was 6 months in reality it was 6-12 weeks.
now the CDC says 3 months when it really is 3-5 weeks.

now check this one out fool , the new test soon to hit the streets the window will be....12 days.

I am sure you will be here telling people 13 weeks when you should be doing something else with your life.

how long did you wait for you to take your test, i am betting 6 weeks. i wish a test would hit the streets as you call it that would detect in 12 days, but you keep missing the part that is needed here in the human body as long as they use an antibody test it wont register shit if you dont produce the antibodies in that time period, basic immunology. as far as calling co and i an asshole , at least we have the balls to register and stay here and help while yahoos like yourself just go around spreading garbage

also the test you are referring to is an antigen test which is not going to replace an antibody test

name calling is not neccessary. what's the old adage? better safe than sorry. i guess if living on the edge & in denial is your thing, go with the 12 day test. if a zest for life & a desire to live, go with 13 weeks.

by the way, look at what i am doing in real life,LOL..... I'm changing communities on thier ignorance of hiv/aids. and eventually I am gonna work towards changing the politics of it as well.... You can read up on me, I've been on Newscasts, i speak to the public in large groups , etc.....what do you do for your community???

I'm even working on a full feature in the newspapers to break the stigmas, to expose the ignorance, and to get people to get tested.... tell me again, what are you doing in real life?
