I have oral thrush 10 days after a potential exposure. Is this a symptom of hiv?

hi

regards from india

Very unlikely the oral thrush is caused by HIV, ARS symptoms do not appear so soon and besides ARS symptoms are concurrent.

Goodluck

Although ARS can occur at 10 days, symptoms are usually concurrent and thrush isn't usually one of them. It usually occurs when cd counts are below 500.

Story is a long one, so i´ll try to keep it short. Risk was high (condom broke with sex worker 10-15 second exposure). Throat was painful that night and my throat was thick for the next day or two. By day 5 my lymph glands were very swollen and I had a headache or two. No fever as such, but had a hot flush (for a couple of mins) 1 day approx 7-8 days later. No rash. Oral thrush came approx 10 days post exposure. I´ve had some headaches since but they stopped about 7 days ago, and i experienced a loss of appetite from 3 to 16 days post exposure.

Reason for asking about thrush is that I have read that oral thrush is the most significant indicator of hiv infection.

10-15 second exposure is not really a significant risk, particulalry if it was vaginal intercourse. You were protected most of the time.

Still, since you were with a sex worker and there was unprotected contact, you are at risk for stds, including HIV. Get an std panel now (chlamydia, sphyillis, ghonorrhea), have a doctor look at your "thrush" ( it is not something you can diagnose yourself), and have an HIV test 3 months after the incident.

Also, thrush is not a main indicator of primary HIV. However, it may or may not be an indicator of *symptomatic* HIV or AIDS (that is, years after infection). It a lso occurs for many other reasons besides HIV/AIDS.
