Reactive Elisa, Non-reactive Western Blot
      #17486 - 04/20/01 01:28 AM

I went in for an HIV antibody test 90 days post-possible exposure and the result came back reactive on the Elisa and non-reactive on the western blot. Are the antibodies produced in response to HIV unique or are they generic to a host of other infections. What is your take on this. How do you think things will look like 6 weeks from now. I go in for a confirmatory test then.

Here's my risk:

came in contact with some infected vaginal secretion that was dry. My skin was broken.

Many thanks and God bless!!

your risk is very small. HIV does not live long outside of the human body. If the vaginal secretions were dry that would suggest it has been outside in contact with the air for some time. HIV antibodies are unique to HIV to fight that infeection. The reason why they confirm with the WB is because, although rare false positives do happen. You need both tests to show positive for them to diagnose infection. With that being said fales negitives with the WB are just about unheard of today.
I know this must be hard on you but try to relax and not think about it too much. Your exposure was very low risk (low enough that I do not know of one doctor that would even recommend you test at all). I would not wait the 6 weeks and would test now. if the WB was indeterminate (with reactive ELISA) it might suggest that you were in the process of seroconverting , but with that not the case and you outside the 3rd Gen ELISA windon period of 3 months testing now would be conclusive.

Hope this helps you out. I think a false positive ELISA (or lab error) are more likley the cause of the positive test given your low risk exposure. HIV is not an easy virus to catch.

WHAT KIND OF DOCTOR WOULD TELL YOU TO WAIT SIX WEEKS WITH TEST RESULTS LIKE THAT??? I CAN'T BELIEVE A DOCTOR WOULD PUT ANYONE THROUGH THAT TORTURE - THAT TEST SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE IMMEDIATELY!

This doesn't sound right. The risk is miniscual to none that you could get exposed in this way. I highly doubt that there would be enough live virus on a door knob to get into the skin and cause an infection. Furthermore, any doctor who knows anything about HIV would immediately test you the NEXT day and probably with an antigen test to boot. You're not the same guy who had an "unknown" woman come into your work and masterbate and then leave... are you?

Sounds like lab error to me. Especially since the WB was Non-Reactive (negative) not indetermite.

Base on all sources that I have read, you are negative. Elisa test can send wrong signal and that is the reason why it set to be the sensitive first line screening test.
