rapid test questions
      #173881 - 02/07/06 09:10 AM

It's been a little over ten weeks. I was neg at 6 weeks ELISA (as I have mentioned before)
I am getting this 10 week test done so I can rationalize with my irrational fears. A 10 week negative is even stronger than a 6 week negative. And even if it was positive.... I would want to know now. I hate living like this, speculating and being afraid.
I read that rapid blood tests can produce higher rates of false positives. I have been ill (sore thorat swoleln glands) If this was NOT related to HIV, could it cause the rapid test to pick up false antibodies?
Also, is the rapid test as sensitive as the newer generations of ELISA's? Shades- I know you said they were just as accurate, but is that after the waiting period?
Anyway, my test is at 4......... I'll check before I go to see if there are any recommendations.

Generation or type of test doesn't really matter after 6-8 weeks. A rapid test at 10 weeks is just as good as a standard test. Most rapid tests are third generation, I believe.

Thanks for the reply!
I actually just found out that I don't have childcare this afternoon and don't want to bring my active two year old. He'd be bored and therefore hyper... and I'd be worried that if the results were positive...... I couldn't pull myself together enough to take care of him.
I also think I'd piss the counselor off ,as he recommended that I wait until 13 weeks to test. I really DON'T want to waste the resources that are there for the public, as I read in another thread. I might just fork over the sixty dollars that I don't really have and buy a Home Access. Or wait till 13 weeks. Only 3 weeks to go, but it feels like 27 years.

You're welcome.

I don't know what your risk was -- was your partner pos? If it makes you feel better& will help with your angst, get the test. However, I would recommend waiting the 3 weeks as opposed to taking the home access test, which can be quite cumbersome from what I understand. In most cases it is better to deal with a live person, face-to-face. But that's just my opinion.

For what it is worth, a 6 week test is a very good indication of your status. Try not to worry.

I wish you all the very best.

rapid test are just as sensitive as an elisa. cost is the difference. the only thing that i have heard in the clinic and on line news, was the oral being pulled in some major cities because of to much sensitivie, false positive. the rapid blood has not done this and is 99.8 accurate for positve and more so for neg. (after 13 weeks, this is the manufacture caustion not mind, so anonymous go to hell), hope this helps you. love and peace
