how effective are condoms?
      #172132 - 01/28/06 02:13 PM

if condoms are used properly for gay men in anal sex--how effective do u think they are in preventing hiv and other std's? my friend's doctor told him that they can fail up to 30% of the time but i think she (the doctor) is wong. she is very conservative so i think that's just her way of promoting abstinence. well, that's my guess anyway 'cuz i heard that condoms were like 99% effective. what do u think?

I don't know but its a good question. For anal alot of lub should be used. I would guess they do not fail offten and are as safe as it could be expected.

definitely lots of lube is needed for anal sex. your doctor is wrong about the failure rate, lots of abstinence sex sites will say the same thing, but research just proves them wrong, condoms used correctly that dont break and believe me you know it, (at least the one that is wearing knows it , from my experience)and it doesnt slip off which i guess can and does happen are pretty much 99 percent effective. love and peace

latex or polyurethane are extremely effective, i dont play the number games, so i wont quote numbers. Lambskin condems dont protect very wee.....as for other STD, condem work equally effectice except for those std's that by skin to akin cnontact,,,,,

hi

regards from india

The proper and consistent use of latex condoms when engaging in sexual intercourse greatly reduces a person's risk of acquiring or transmitting sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV infection. Moreoften condom failure is attributed to human error and improper use.

Below i would insert a quote from a website, which should be quite helpful:

" In theory, the effectiveness of a condom alone is about 97 percent. The condom's actual effectiveness (taking into account human error; like not using them correctly, putting them on the right way, etc. drops the effectiveness rate down to 80 - 90 percent"

Goodluck!
