HCV HIV coinfection?
      #171717 - 01/26/06 11:40 AM

Please help - i had -ve HIV and HCV antibody tests at 12wks5days although i have experienced a lot of symptoms:
Please, can somebody help me. I am really frightened.
I had receptive anal sex (condom, but no lube so may have damaged condom) and gave oral sex on 7th Oct - i know my anus was was cut as it bled afterwards.
I lost about 10lbs over the 3-4th week after.
At about 6 weeks, the glands in my neck and armpits were swollen.
At the same time i vomited three times and felt extreme fatigue.
The next week, the glands in my groin came up and stayed up for a couple of days with a pain in my spleen.
In work, my colleagues noticed and were concerned i was ill.
At 8 1/2 weeks i got a full STD and HIV screening done - all came back clear.
I then went to my doctor the next week and had blood tests done for mono, thyroids, CBC and liver function.
All came back clear excpet a slight elevation in ALT in the liver test - it was at 67 (range 5 - 50) the doc said this may be down to drinking the day before, but i don't drink.
I then had Hepatitis and HIv tests down at 12weeks 5days - all came back clear.
In the meantime, my doc has referred me to a specialist at the hospital, because of my concerns.
last week i have had extreme pain in my upper right abdomen and the corresponding area on my back, accompanied by discomfort and abdominal bloating. This is probably HCV at least, as it has a longer window period, but couldn't co-infection result in a longer window period for HIV due to the body working overtime to produce antibodies?

Please help - i just don't understand. I have been an otherwise healthy 25 year old male - just finally getting my appetite back properly now.

I'm not a doctor, but what I can say is HCV has to be gotten thru blood to blood. If you know that that did not take place, I think your ok. The condom was not broke and I believe that you are ok there as well. I really think that maybe you just caught something from someone that will pass. Don't get all stressed out, you will just add to your health problems and that in ityself will make you even more confused. When you stress you make yourself have more symptoms and then you don't know what is from what. Hope this helps, I know it's hard as hell to do.

I'm back, Ok, I re-read your first post. If you had a cut when you were having sex then that changes things. You should do what Dr. Bob says and test at 3 months. Could you have this person you were with get tested? I have had alot of your symptoms as far as the weight loss and lots of other symptoms, I have tested neg out 10 months. From what I understand about the HIV-HCV co-infection, it can take the body a little longer to produce antibodies, but that don't mean you have it. Dr. Bob posted in the safe sex section a answer that may help answer your question from a doc. The title of the post was something like The truth las vegas, I don't know if I correct on that title, but what I do remember is that it was very recent and has Las Vegas in it. Hope that helps
