If I were to test positive would you think I would receive better support from a family doctor, or a clinic?

I just had to make such a decision. At this point... I want the very very very best HIV specialist I can find. I want someone who knows this stuff forward and backward and will be on the forefront of what's coming out. Just my opinion, but in this area, I want the best.

Your best support and care will come from an Infectous Disease Specialist....I'm the first case, my family Dr. has every had to deal with who is positive.

It is usually an infectious disease specialist. Most likely be in a larger city. You might try searching some of the research hospital sites in your area or asking your local aids orginization. Sometimes you have to ask around. I got a recommendation by asking a Doctor friend of mine in Seattle, who asked a doctor friend of his at John Hopkins, who was friends with a doctor that used to be with Washington University in St. Louis, who then passed on the name of a person now at Washington University and Barnes Hospital. I also ask for recommendations from other positive folks. So far I've started with one I had heard about and will probably stay with him.

You can also go to ask the Experts on the TAB above and go and ask. They have fountains of numbers. If you give them a bit of detail that helps them. They respond withing almost 24 hours. Its a great tool. Do NOT go see a GP! HIV is for HIV specialists or ID specialist. The way new meds and drug therapies are changing, you need to be sure he/she knows her stuff. They could really muck you up... Do your research. Most GP's will refer you anyway.
Best

Jesus Blix! You called the entire country finding your Specialist. Here I am in a isolated remote desolate waste land full of bitter cold and my first call was to Dr. Ben.. Dont figure... You MI folks always make a big deal of finding a silly old ID Specialist who is going to keep you alive till your 95. Hopefully you had friends and family rates on your phone.
Love

i'd say a specialist is going to be more compassionate, because they understand the disease better, it is there specialty. where as just a gp knows a little of alot of everything. my gp was cold hearted when he told me i was +. love and prayers daisey

Well Eric, I just said I wanted the best... LOL Actually I didn't even know where to start. The doctor I use out here in the boonies is where I ended up with my screening. She was the one that gave me the "I've got bad news" speech. (which, I even practiced for her on my 45 minute drive to her office that day)... but being totally on my own with no one to make a recommendation or provide guidance I did end up with quite circular route to get a name... so far I'm not using that one though, but it is nice to know that someone you met years ago as a friend would care enough to go to that extent for you. So its all very cool...
