health clinics offer free 20 minute testing. if you are going to do a rapid test i strongly encourage you to make sure it is after the window period.
as far as when does hiv become aids? the classification for aids is when your cd4 count drops below 200. some people when they first test are in that classification, others are not, but meds help to bring those counts up. no one can really say how long it takes for hiv to become aids. it really depends on how you take care of your body and alot of other factors. some people may be non-progressors and others may be rapid progressors. no one truly knows and we are not doctors here. the best thing you can do is test and find out for sure if you are + or not.
prayers,
daisey

Check the literature, check the studies, check the news reports, check the HIV clinics, the only real difference in accuracy (based on samplings of hundreds of people) between the rapid tests (oral or blood) is the increased risk of false positives, which can be nerve-wracking. There, of course, will always be odd cases here or there that suggest otherwise. I have heard of people testing positive on standard tests, then test negative on rapids which turned out to be true. The opposite occurs also.

hiv/aids is different for EVERYONE, no one reacts the same to it. some places say 10 yrs of progression, some say 15, others ya see people posting be 20 yrs positive. As far as knowing, when ya go from ya from hiv to aids.....if you are tested positive, the reason your infectous disease specialist measures your tcell count and your viral load is too keep an eye on those. In a nutshell, laymans terms, the difference between hiv & aids, is those counts...when tcells drop below 200, and your viral load goes up, you are gonna be classified as aids. Some will argue, you must have OI's (oppurtunistic infections) etc to be aids, blah blah blah....fact is, whether ya have aids or hiv, yer treated with the same meds, and same goes for the OI's. The lower your Tcells are, the more likely you are to get an OI. but keep in mind, when ya have a comprimised immune system anything can happen, regardless of your counts. You cant tell anything by symptoms, only way to know is to get tested and monitor it from there....good luck & god bless
