Oral sex and mouth ulcers
      #168363 - 01/02/06 07:56 AM

Few days ago I had protected sex with a partner of unknown status. We also had unprotected oral sex.

However, over the past week weeks I have been experiencing discomfort under my tongue and have discovered that I have a small mouth ulcer on the underside of my tongue and I am now freaking out.

Can HIV be passed from oral sex (didn't ejaculate) through a mouth ulcer? There was lots of spit and pre cum present at the time.

PLease help!

Spit is not infectious. But Pre-Cum can apparently contain some level of active HIV in some positive people.

So the answer to your question is yes.....BUT -

First, you do not know that the person in question was HIV+. In all likelyhood they were not.
Second, saliva creates a hostile environment in the mouth for HIV particles. If there was a lot of spit around, that would be good news.
Thirdly, all the evidence points to the fact that oral transmission of HIV is very rare and the per-incident probablity of this occuring is extremely low. Much lower than any other type of (unprotected) sexual activity. Long term studies on groups of sero-discordant couples who practice unprotected oral sex have reported extremely low infection rates, sometimes nil, after thousands of potential exposures.

So, the long and the short of it is that it is HIGHLY unlikely that HIV is a concern here, though you may wish to get tested at 3 months to be absolutely sure. A lot of people would say that a test is more about reducing anxiety than a real medical need in the circumstances.

Some people are quite happy with the very low level of risk associated with unprotected oral sex. But if it is going to cause you concern in future, I suggest you use condoms for this too. That way there would be no more freak outs!

its like 1 in 10,000 chance of transmission in oral sex, although the chance exists...theres not one documented case of it being transmitted through oral sex....Human Saliva breaks down the virus too much*
