PCR sensitivity
      #168168 - 12/29/05 10:49 PM

For everyone I am posting the information I gathered about RNA/DNA testing's sensitivity ( i.e not reporting false negative),
1. RNA-PCR 90 - 98 % (depending on timing, immunse response, assay etc.)
2. bDNA little more sensitive
3. DNA-PCR > 99%
4. ALL the RNA/DNA tests approach 100 % when AR syndromes are present.
5. All the tests are less sensitive before 2 weeks
6. The timings are average and every person is different as are the different strains of virus.

Hope this helps. Any comments. RNA-PCR is ok, but 2-10 in each 100 are reported false -ve. That sucks

You also forgot it is not and approved form of testing in the US, the CDC & FDA states that it gives many false positives due to its sensitivity being so high. It is not supposed to be used for detection of HIV and only used for maintenance of the condition to count the copies of the virus in the system and to do this on a regular basis (most HIV+ people have blood work done every 3 to 6mo) to see if the virus is replicating or not. A person may have a detectable amount of many cells that look similar to HIV cells in there body which would make them come out as HIV+ on one of these tests, but without having a CDC & FDA approved HIV test first the lab Tec could be counting copies of the wrong thing giving you a false positive reading.

thanx Gman for the info. That is why i gave the information on PCR 'sensitivity' not 'specificity'.
