I was looking at the table where it says that
6.5 outta 10,000 of exposure by insertive tops can become infected when exposed to the virus.
50 outta 1,000 bottoms can become infected
5 outta 1,000 women in vaginal intercourse etc.
looking at these stats, i really think the people who become infected with hiv, is because they did a lot of unsafe sex with a ton of people, or probably exposed to one person but over a very prolonged period of time and with many episodes of unprotected sex.
it seems as it is highly unlikely to become infected with one simple exposure, i mean look at those odds!!! even the highest risk scenario is virtually very difficult receptive anal sex with ejaculation inside 50 outta 1,000.
what do you guys think?

while I understand what you are saying...the odds seem like it is almost impossible to contract HIV...you don't have to have sex 10,000 times to contract it...you only have to have it once....there are plenty of people that had sex, or shot up one time, that got infected. There are 43 million people in the world infected with HIV....1 million in the US....so don't get the misleading belief that it is near impossible. It is dangerous thinking like that that will lead to problems. Is it difficult to contract, yes....but it only takes ONE TIME. difficult does NOT mean impossible. With that said, I know you are scared....but the odds are in your favor....a risky event does NOT mean you are infected. Just get tested so you can know for sure...and then be safe from here on out.

maybe someone else saw this on the Dr. Bob site, but someone tried to put those numbers in perspective. The one that jumped out at me was that following the statistics we all have seen, 2 planes a day would crash at Chicago airport. There were more listed, but I can't remember them. I don't doubt that the statistics are accurate, or at least reasable, but people win the lottery after all...

oh I totally agree with you guys, but somehow those statistics are a powerful force that can help people like me who are currently going through hell, feel better and hopeful. they kinda make sense, if every exposure resulted in infection, the numbers of hiv infected people would be even higher, 43 millions is less than 1% of the entire population of the globe, if it wasn't because the virus is very hard to pass the numbers would be far more devastating, because I know for sure that millions of people have sex every day and so many of them probably dont even protect themselves.
As for me, in the worst case scenario if i come out positive i will have to deal with all this, I still dont know how, but somehow i will, but if i am poz, the virus will die with me, I am not exposing any one to this pain that i am going thru right now and all this anxiety
and if I am negative, which i pray to the lord i am, I am taking on a mission to educate those close to me, especially my adolescent nephews and nieces, and a big promiss tomyself to never put me in such situations, life is too beautiful to play this Russian roulette game.

I replied earlier... I've also just gone through the same thing, fear and waiting. The statistics helped me out alot. I added up the demographic stats, the 5 in 10000 stat, that i'm circumcised... all of that made me have the shred of hope that I could make it through. also religion, this board and some good friends gave kept me from jumping off a ledge.
I don't know your situation, but I hope that you will be ok. Good luck. Your comment about Russian roulette is the exact thing that I was thinking the last 5 days. Sometime life gives hard lessons.

Oh, I didn't mean to take away the hope that the statistics give you! I hope that I didn't. The statistics prove that the odds are most definetly in your favor....but I just don't want people thinking that they can go out and play "russian roulette" as you said, because one time is enough...you n eed to protect yourself. But, the odds are most definetly stacked in your favor...and my prayers are said daily for all those suffering the fear of HIV as well as the devastation of the disease itself. I myself suffered the horrible and dreaded "window period" and I know the pain and anxiety all too well. I wish you the best. keep us posted!

I am in the same situation. lots of symptoms , scared shitless and going over the odds over and over. The 5 in 10,000 if the partner happens to be poz sounds overwhelmingly in my favor but I keep wondering if I am one of the five. Only think about it 24/7. It sucks

Once is all it takes. A guy doing "free testing" at AIDS Services of North Texas said something very similar to needing many exposures to get it. I called back later, because I felt that it was bogus info. I found out that the guy works for some drug & rehab outfit and was not affiliated with AIDS Services. There is a lot of misinformation out there.
