I have heard many conflicting reports. I have heard it only 2 seconds, Ive heard it dies in minutes, and Ive heard it can live HOURS! What is the real lifespan? Has it been proved with tests?

it dies instantly in a dry state, in a wet state it must be kept at 4 degree c. and than it will last for 3 weeks,

I'd really be interested to see where you got this information. (as in the 4 degree c for three hours & dies instantly in a "dry" state) of course...if its dry....hiv is dead. but from what I hear in the quiestion -- as if it is still "wet" in which case....hiv begins to die within "seconds" of exposed to air

The reason you see a variety of answers is that it all depends on the conditions. HIV can live longer in larger amounts of fluids outside the body -- for example, in a pool of blood it would live longer than it would in a smear, which would dry more quickly. Just remember that a) HIV is VERY fragile relative to other microorganisms, and b) while you ought to avoid unecessary exposure to fluids such as blood, getting semen or vaginal fluid on unbroken skin is not risky.
