Fingering woes, would anyone reccommend PEP?
      #161179 - 10/05/05 08:47 AM

I fingered a high risk person's clitoris. I have very bad cuticles, cracked and dry and red, but as far as I can tell their is no open wound (aka blood flowing out).

If I went to the ER and asked for PEP would the doctors laugh me out of the room (as I suspect) or does anyone think I might have cause to be worried?

I can see redness and scab type marks in the cracks and sides of my fingernails, I sort of doubt this is a transmission risk but I would prefer to hear it from someone that knows a lot more than me.

Thank you for your kindness, and for listening.

I only know what I've learned here...and that is that fingering is not a risk. If a wound or "crack" at your cuticle is scabbed over, it is not a route of transmission. It would have to be an open bleeding cut. If the doctor at the hospital said you don't need PEP, I think its because you don't need PEP. Relax.

Maybe a little more education about methods of contraction of HIV would be in line. Yes you would be laughed out of the ER by all because there is not even a chance.
You would think that if you are so concerned now why you were not concerned when they taught about it in school, it isn’t like it is something new. It has been part of education programs for 20 years to make sure the kids knew how it could be contracted before going in to the real world, maybe the youth just don’t care thinking they would never be affected by its spread.

GMan, I think you are correct...although these things are taught in schools, several things are evident (from having a teenager myself) 1. Health Class where these things are taught is like home ec....it is the unimportant class...not like English or Algebra...something kids have go in one ear and out the other (I am generalizing slightly, but for the most part, I am fairly dead on) and 2. Kids do have the "wont' happen to me" mentality. But, people my age (sad to say, old enough to have a teenager!) didn't get the extensive education on HIV....we got bits and pieces on the news, or what we actually sought out. I'm amazed at the lack of knowledge in the 30+ age group

Actually i think it is a matter of all information out there being conflicting. I've heard thaat fingering is zero risk, and that cdc has no reported cases of transmission via his route. However some sites / people say that if you have a cut or rip or tear in cuticle, or open wound that it is high risk. Then other sites say that for it to be a risk, you would have needed to cut the tip of your finger off with a knife, and then immediately inserted it into a woman's vagina, and then she must also be menstruating.

Some peopel exaggerate risks when teaching, to scare people from doing anything. Some people preach that everythign is a risk, to keep them from being liable if they say they arent. It's not a lack of care or concern, and it is not disrespect. It is a matter of all sources of information offering conflicting or differing information, which makes finding the truth nearly impossible.

I've been freaking out for a couple months now because of kissing / fingering and licking the outside of a vagina. At first all the sites i was reading said i was at a very high risk. Then over a period of 2 months, a majority of peopel i've spoken to, including an hiv counselor, and people here, and at other sites, have said that i had zero risk. Or low risk with the risk being theorhetical only. It's taken a lot of time for me to calm down, and only after talking to a lot of people, and weighing the responses.

Please understand that people are misinformed, (which is not their fault), and lack of information leads to fear....
