amount of virus?
      #15904 - 02/21/01 03:10 PM

Once again .... just wondering if anyone has any feedback on the amount of virus needed for a one-time exposure. I have heard there needs to be ALOT of highly concentrated virus in order for infection to occur ..... is this true? The CDC simply says that one microscopic amount is enough .... but most researchers don't agree. Feedback?

The answer is no one knows. It's not like they can inject a small amount of virus into someone and increase the amount until the person is infected and then know how much it took.

Besides, there are too many variables to consider. Other STD's that are present, person's viral load, etc. If a person had an undectectable viral load, they might be less likely to pass on the virus than someone who didn't. One amount for one person may not be enough for another person.

The odds from a one time exposure are pretty low, but not non-existant.
